Handwaved CR Meme

The passengers have been living on this ship for a while now, and it's likely that they've fallen into certain habits and routines. Little things have become part of their day, from lunch dates with friends, to quiet nights in the library, or long-standing blood feuds. Even the newest passengers have likely found themselves some common haunts and familiar faces. This is a meme to talk about, flesh out, and collaborate on some of those behind-the-scenes moments and routines!

1. Post a comment with your character, and give us an idea of what sort of things they get up to around the ship! Be as detailed or as vague as you'd like.
2. Talk about what kind of handwaved CR you can inspire! Is your character the type to stop and chat with friends on the promenade? Are they consistently the highest score on multiple arcade cabinets? IDK, you tell me!
3. When you look at other characters' routines, you might notice some moments that line up! Even if your characters are total strangers, they might see each other at the buffet every day, or maybe they're unwittingly competing for the high score on DDR. And close CR might mean weekly dinners, book clubs, sparring sessions every morning... like I said, this is where you shine!!
4. This is also a good chance to handwave characters exchanging contact information, generating some more inbox threads!

TLDR: write about your character's life on the ship and then compare notes with other people, find CR, ???, profit

idk if we should do headers but if we do: Sharky Boshaw, Room 131

Sharky's a common sight in the bars across the ship (especially Hurikane and Tauva), as well as the pool and hot tub. Late-night skinny dipping in the hot tub is a thing, and he will not be shamed out of it! Since the sauna is one of the few pants-free sanctuaries on board, Sharky visits at least once or twice a week.

He also spends like, soooo much time wandering around the Tommy Bahama. Like, he probably walks an hour both ways into the store just looking at the awful shirts like "this is a good deal (free)." He'll try on stuff right there in the shop, because who the fuck is gonna care???

Most of the meals he gets are gonna be at the buffet. He doesn't trust the sushi joint not to shank him, TBH. He brings his boombox with him sometimes, jamming out to whatever CDs he has available (right now its 80s music). He'll hit up the arcade from time to time but he's mostly just invested in reliving his childhood than actually landing on any scoreboards.

probably some other stuff??? idk, i really didn't think this through. OH he really likes texting and if he's exchanged contact info with someone he WILL text them. (i'm just real bad at keeping up with it so sometimes he doesn't LMFAO)

Mizuki | Room 111

★ Mizuki is a bit of a lurker, using his camouflage to skulk around the ship and see what people are up to most of the time. It's not too terribly often, but he's likely sat in on conversations he thought might have been interesting if there's something you wouldn't have minded him listening to?

★ He absolutely would religiously check the Pac-Man console @ the arcade, and if his high score is beat, he'll spend hours getting to the top again. Other games might not have him in the #1 spot, buuuut Mizuki usually can make it to top 5. He is a gamer, and worked in a retro video game store for a long time.

★ Ebalon is currently teaching Mizuki how to play the piano, and will sometimes just be solo practicing @ John's when the Billy Joel sets aren't playing. He's not very good yet, but he'll do his best to put on some entertainment if there's others there.

★ CR will get music sent to them periodically. He listens to stupid video game OSTs and electronica mostly, though, sorry??

★ He also texts stupid bullshit to them occasionally. Mostly just to check in on them. Also just because he's a goofball.

★ Occasionally just stuffs his face with various meat from various restaurants. He eats a lot… Canonically, this boy ate out a whole warehouse of fish by himself?? Uh—

★ There's probably some other stuff I'll tack on later, but this is the gist of his fluff stuff, anyway?!

Murderbot (SecUnit, Rin; Cabin 119)

- Has drones around the public areas of the ship almost all the time. These drones are about a centimeter in diameter and have a propeller at the top. They do not enter private areas like cabins, the sauna, the showers at Calgona spa.

- Eats meals at the buffet almost always (occasionally can be found at Scoops). Defaults to dino chicken nuggets and mac and cheese. Does not eat its vegetables.

- Occasionally found on deck/in library doing art. Has a pack of metallic gel pens and a set of watercolor paints. It's still learning, be kind to it.

- It's glad to show people serial dramas from its world on a media player it received as a regain. Most commonly this is The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon, but it has others (Worldhoppers, A Ship Called Excalibur).

- It's being trained as a medical assistant by Watson, and if its drones spot things like injuries and hangovers, it might show up to help.

Ava Starr, Room 114

-ava pointedly tries to avoid having too obvious of a schedule because idk paranoia, but the one place she'll always be is dinner at the buffet with fio at 6pm. it's probably obvious to observers that she's rather close to fio, so anyone knowing about that relationship is fine by me! and if anyone would be inclined to come say hi during dinner is welcome to do so :)

-she spends a lot of her time lurking around the ship invisible and slipping through walls without much care about what's on the other side of them. so there's definitely potential she's seen characters in embarrassing situations or up to things they didn't think were being observed. she's not an outright creeper, she'd quickly leave if it's a sexy thing. but i'm totally open to things she might have caught others doing that might come up in other threads! optional whether they're aware or not she was lurking.

-and if it's characters she hasn't met or doesn't know all that well, and they try to give her a friendly hi in the hallway or ask questions, ava's likely to up and disappear. i want to play with her tendency to be a lil weirdo but those threads would be like 2 tags long. but there's definitely a lot of new characters she hasn't interacted with so it'd be nice to establish they've at least seen each other around and they're open to confront her about later.

-ava sure loves the library and coffee shop, but she tends to visit them at later hours. she's been falling asleep in the library more often. and tends to sit in the same seats in the back corner of both locations. but that's such a cliche loner place to sit, maybe it's been taken by other characters and she just glowers at them the entire time.

-she doesn't like giving out her phone number or her room number and sucks at texting, but if anyone really wants to attempt contact information from her...

-some nights she drags out her lil row boat from camp and floats along in the pool. this might be annoying to swimmers, sorry.

Johnny Summer (Cabin 102)

- Regular smoker; found in Tauva with Watson or on his own, getting his nicotine fix.

- Occasionally takes over Hurikane as a cocktail bartender.

- Happy to have company for meals wherever.

- Does not go on excursions, you'll see him still on the ship prepping for people to come back traumatized.

- Johnny is glad to give fashion advice in Tommy Bahama or have a salon day at Calgona spa.

- Has recently started visiting John's to play piano? He's VERY out of practice.

Hokay, but Johnny would love to dress Sharky nice sometime, and then do his hair. Give him an occasion to pretty the Shark up for!

There are nights when Natsuno goes to watch his (ever-increasing) campy movies on the pool screen. He nods at Ava in her row boat, sets up the movie and camps in a chair without looking at her again...

...but occasionally popcorn is floating her way, and if she wants to watch a specific movie/replay the current one, he wordlessly obliges.

Natsuno and Mizuki hang out a lot (provided that Ebalon is somewhere else). Maybe they play a video game together, or each do their own thing - Mizuki practices the piano, Natsuno is reading a book, and they just vibe.

Also you bet the creepy pictures keep coming.

aw yes i love that, makes it hard to sulk as much with campy movies playing. she'll probably give him her copy of rogers the musical sometime as a joke. because more people have to suffer it.

Giles, Room 140

• Can be found people watching and occasionally writing in various places on the ship. Particularly in Sand Dollars, the library, and out on the deck in the sunshine.

• Frequents the library an awful lot, and has a new book almost every day.

• Visits one or other of the bars once or twice a week, usually to spend time with people he knows well rather than drinking alone.

• Only eats proper meals actually on the ship maybe 3 times a week at most. Usually tends towards the buffet, but might be found in any of the food providing places for it.

• He's not overly likely to strike up a conversation, especially not with someone he doesn't know. But he'll happily return a smile and sit in companionable silence with anyone.

• Won't introduce himself unless the person he's talking to introduces themself first. Also won't give out his contact details/room number unless asked. (Also a note! If you want to handwave that Giles and your character have met and introduced themselves, I'm more than happy with that, but I do want to know what your character will have introduced themself as, because Giles will generally only refer to people by exactly the name they first give, unless told specifically to use something else afterwards)

• Finally, and arguably most Importantly: Cat
Every couple of days or so a small short-haired tuxedo cat with bright green eyes can be found chilling out in the library, or snacking on sushi.
The cat acts like a mostly normal cat that definitely isn't a transformed person, but it does seem to seek out people who are more worried than usual to provide them with some good therapeutic snuggles. It's also hypoallergenic and doesn't leave any fur behind anywhere. Weird!

Steve Harrington / cabin 133

Steve looks like your average fit teenager who is being played by a 30 yr old man. Right now he has no clothes from home apart from the absolutely awful outfit he arrived in so he's strictly sporting Tommy Bahama threads. He doesn't like them but he genuinely believes he makes them look good. Wears a lot of hair product.

He isn't keep a strict schedule so you might encounter him at any time of day or night, it really just depends. If he can't sleep he'll get up and wander around and as a traumatized teenager who's currently really goin thru it, there are a lot of nights he's up and wandering.

He's generally approachable though he can be kinda cranky sometimes.

⪼ Sports Deck - He spends a lot of time hanging out here. He hasn't been able to do much because he's got healing injuries but you might catch him idly shooting hoops every now and then, just not doing anything that requires more than throwing a ball until he's better. Once he realizes there's a ping pong table he will absolutely pester anyone he sees for a game since it requires less exertion.

⪼ Windjammer - He eats pretty much all of his meals here. Usually open to company.

⪼ Tommy Bahama - Spends a sad amount of time here digging through clothes because he's certain that someday, somehow, if he just looks hard enough, he'll find something he actually wants to wear.

⪼ Playback - He's not a video game guy by any means but he still hangs out here sometimes just for something to do, but usually only if there's already other people here. He doesn't play any of the proper video games but he'll play foosball, air hockey, that kind of thing.

⪼ Bars - Ever so often you'll catch him in one of these, seeking out an irresponsible adult to grab him a beer please.

⪼ Around - As I said before, more often than not you'll find him just kinda wandering around the decks or the lounge, looking bored. This is an athletic guy who can't currently do a lot of athletic stuff, who doesn't like reading for fun, doesn't watch a lot of movies, etc etc, struggling to find stuff to entertain him on a cruise ship. It's rough, buddy.

Arthur is 1) worried and 2) often in the library and I would love him to pet cat. He will talk to the cat like the sweet little baby it is, and if he finds it there a couple times he'll start bringing like, little bits of chicken from one of the restaurants or something for it. Cat.

If she's invisibly lurking places, Ava's probably caught Giles transforming into a cat on occasion. He generally tries to keep that he can do that on the down-low and transforms only when he's pretty certain no-one is looking

Phil’s in the sauna once in a while, picking through and preening his wings. They’ve probably met.

Phil has been a regular at John’s to practice on the piano ever since he arrived, usually in the evenings but sometimes the early morning, so they’ve almost certainly bumpes into each other there.

Phil comes to the library somewhat regularly, so he’s probably asked Giles for recommendations. And they HAVE met but hardly spoken since, but I think Phil is happy to Do Whatever in companionable silence here and there.

Johnny does not know anything composed after 1920, and he hasn't touched a piano since he was 16. But he's drawn to John's because that's the prospective venue for his wedding and because...mood shit.

If Phil were to offer lessons, Johnny would take it.

jinx (room 119 & theater rafters)

➜ jinx and ekko have breakfast together every morning. never been established where they have their breakfast - probably at the fancier timed place.

➜ the theater is where jinx is a good bit of her time. and it's mostly up in the rafters because that's considered her "hide out". there's a wooden deck that she made which isn't anything special. just a flat surface she or one can walk across instead of hopping from beam to beam. there's two ways of getting up there.

1) able to parkour your way up through balcony seating (which jinx takes this route).

2) go back stage ➜ climb up the stairs to the stage lightening up above ➜ at the end of that there's a ledge she built for one to walk across to her deck. just have good balance and you probably won't die.

➜ she is seen in hurikane sometimes (the bar holds a lot of importance to her) so your character will see jinx there.

➜ sitting on top of the golf ball at the sporting deck she lounges around there, too. sometimes just sitting or doodling.

➜ at the gym, she is there working out.

➜ buffet, she is there eating like goku to keep her energy going due to shimmer things.

➜ the playback, she is at the teenage lounge being a teenager. she and ekko fight over the number 1 at some of the arcade games. so feel free to see jinx getting heated every time she walks in there and see ekko taking over the number 1 slot. kicking the machine or something.

➜ jinx is always texting like a typical teenager. definitely texting her circle every day.

➜ i dont write this part about jinx enough but feel free to notice jinx talking to herself or talking to her weapons. i kinda need to do better at...having her do that in threads with people ( 1) i keep forgetting lmao & 2) i dont want to get TOO annoying with her doing that with everyone cause i know that's not everyone's cup of tea to deal with) but if you want to have your character spot her talking to nothing or her chatting with her guns, feel free.

Oh hey Steve also spends a stupid amount of time in the Tommy Bahama because he knows that one day he'll find something good to wear (a sensible polo shirt). He also eats almost exclusively at the buffet so maybe they've even crossed paths there and then had a boys day Tommy Bahama shopping trip after, or vice versa.

Phil Connors - cabin 137

• John’s - Phil has been a regular here since he arrived in June and practices at the piano every single day for an hour or more—notably he’s been working on Thank You by David Brubeck, and picking his way through the absolute colossus that is the Sonata Pathétique by Beethoven, occasionally brushing up on Round Midnight and other pieces by Thelonious Monk.

• Bars and places - He likes to mix up where he eats and drinks, but besides John’s, he tends to favor The Drunken Sailor, Hurikane, Sand Dollars, Windjammer, and Topy.

• Library - He’s here relatively frequently to parse through the shelves or read. Reading is also something he does in the Lounge.

• Top deck - He used to do this much more frequently in June, then four times a day in July, then twice in August, and now only once. Every morning at 10 AM without fail, he clambers onto the same perch every day with some tiny contraptions and takes readings of a weather, then scribbles the numbers down on a clipboard. The numbers never change.

• Gym - Works out regularly at the gym. Surprisingly built.

• Around - Phil can be found Around seemingly doing shit for the hell of it, often but not always hobbyist. Stacking snowballs to the ceiling and using ice powers to make them stay. Throwing innocuous shit overboard for fun. Perfecting his paper airplane technique, surrounded by dozens of failed models. Adding to his collection of tiny paper stars that he’s gathering in a bucket, folding them idly while he watches a movie on the pool deck. Taking out embarrassing photos of him from Photos at Sea. Hitting up the arcade at Playback for the hell of it.

Diana Abel | Cabin 103

I'm not a super big fan of handwaved CR (I'd much rather play it out!), but here are some of the places you might see Diana. Note that she's only out of her cabin at night because she doesn't want to burst into flames and die in the sunlight. She's picky that way...

BELLONA THEATER: Every single night, without fail, Diana will stop by and sit on the stage to play her guitar. She doesn't care if anyone comes in to listen or if she's all by herself. Sometimes she sings. Sometimes she composes. She's even been known to dance with her guitar tucked up against her torso, like it's a partner. She'll engage anyone who wants to chat. If someone just wants to listen silently, that's okay too!

LIBRARY: Diana loves to visit the library and is often there, sitting on the floor in a corner, reading a steamy romance novel or some poetry. She usually keeps to herself, but if anyone looks confused or lost or in need of a good recommendation, she'll pipe up. Weirdly, she seems extra sensual when she's in the library.

FATE'S DESIGN: Occasionally, Diana willy play a slot machine or too, usually pausing while she's on her way somewhere else. She's always happy to explain the casino to someone who needs a tutorial.

JOHN'S: When the piano isn't playing Billy Joel songs, Diana will sometimes sit at it and play herself. She usually plays showtunes or oldies. Rarely, she might play an original piece. She tries to be pretty unobtrusive about it. If the place is packed, she may stay away.

CHATTERBOX: Sometimes, Diana will hop in for karaoke. Her go-to song is usually Somebody to Love. She'll also take liberally from the Beatles' catalog.

Diana is in the theater every single night, playing her guitar. So Jinx is probably intimately familiar with her music at this point...
