Headcanons are my absolute favourite part of RP, so I wanted an excuse to be nosy and read some of yours!!

This was a pretty popular one back on tumblr!
1) post your blank TLs
2) send each other fruits/questions!
Honestly, the fruits aren't necessary but they make it cute.

If this one doesn't suit your fancy, I'll post a TL with a
more detailed meme and you can send each other prompts
on that instead.

πŸ’ : For a large chunk of his life Jade sure didn't really care about it! An early childhood of natural utter disinterest in interpersonal relationships would evolve into just completely kicking that stuff to the bottom of the priority pole during his resurrection obsession years, and so the friends he did acquire in that time mostly just sort of...barnacled onto him, unbothered by the unsettling personality traits that tended to repulse most everyone else. (Young Jade was a freak yall, this kid was all of the emotionally detached genius with none of the masking + genuine character development he's acquired by present-day lol). Jade would readily say he never really experienced loneliness when he was younger, and it'd be honest! Past that, even while finally acknowledging the necessity of interacting well with people in his post-obsession adulthood, and putting more effort into at least trying to act like a normal human being in a professional capacity...Jade's always been well aware that his cutting humor and generally disingenuous personality are acquired tastes for strangers--if his alarming reputation isn't already doing some repelling to begin with lmao. He was also fully accepting and content with this fact, and little inclined to improve those off-putting impressions for the simple sake of endearing himself to others more.

BUT THEN. Canon events Happened, and through having to travel the world with a gaggle of teens (+1 adult bless u Guy) by obligation for well over a year, he was forcibly exposed to the Power of Friendship for quite awhile! And came away...very fond, of those new friends. Unopposed, to the idea of spending time with them. In fact, once the major conflict of the story is over and there's no longer any reason for the party to stick together, everyone separates to attend to matters in their home countries and I feel Jade is rather put out by the idea that they'll never be able to travel together in quite the same way as they did before ever again. (When he thinks about it, anyway. Which he doesn't, obviously, because that's sappy and beside the point and--)

--Not that he had much time to really mull over that before being plopped onto this boat, Sail-wise! But the Friendship Poisoning has persisted all the same since then, and nowadays he's not really at all opposed to the idea of companionships happening, even if he still never really actively seeks it out and would still get kind of surprised if someone informed him they thought of him as a friend outright. Having comfortable interactions with others is, nice? There can be multiple positive benefits to being able to rely on others and have others rely on you, as it turns out? Maybe he really would actually experience a lil loneliness if he found himself entirely on his own for an extended amount of time these days...

πŸ‰ : Definitely winter!! He was born in a village positioned far enough north that it was snowy year-round, and so that sort of environment was certainly a formative factor in his childhood. (And yes, he sure will have some Feelings about the snow resort coming up, to say the least.....) There's also the obligatory parallels to be made about the numb state of his emotional range in a normal day, and the way he can sometimes employ tactics or carry out actions seen as cold and ruthless without much in the way of hesitation, etc etc. Besides all that, winter is naturally his favored season anyway! Even if he never actually seems bothered by hotter temperatures at all...looks at that one volcano saga in canon......

πŸ₯ : Keterburg has...baggage! It probably always will at least a lil, for him, even if by now Jade has made some personal growth in canon that makes thoughts of this place less completely unhappy for him--more bittersweet than anything else, nowadays. As mentioned above, it's where he was born and where he spent his childhood...and it's also where the most horrific mistakes of his life were made. The empty lot where Gelda Nebilim's schoolhouse once stood will always be there, as well as the gravestone memorializing her, and these will always be reminders to contend with every time he visits, even if he's come to better terms with it all.

Even without all the trauma, honestly, Jade likely would have wanted to move out of Keterburg sooner rather than later anyhow in his youth, likely to pursue higher education on the mainland of Malkuth as some form of fonologist; Keterburg's starting to grow and thrive as a sort of snow-tourism spot under Nephry's mayor skills these days, but in his time it was a pretty obscure and remote little town with few resources. Following the trauma that Sure Did Happen, then, Jade def had absolutely no issue with leaving Keterburg behind as a child to attend the Imperial Military Academy in Grand Chokmah (so he could pursue refining fomicry)--to the point of being willing to get himself by adopted by a respected military family to acquire the leverage for this!--and so, for a long while, his returns home were very sparse. Throughout his schooling he refused to ever visit; then, he dropped by once after the end of his draft in the Hod War, and another time a few years later to attend a wedding, both occasions mainly for his sister's sake. The third time would be during canon events by necessity after he was presumed dead in Akzeriuth for a hot minute. Now that he's improved relations both with his own memories and his sister post-canon, subsequent visits would be much...easier. Less off-putting as an idea, and perhaps finally a bit more frequent.

Funnily enough Keterburg in general does claim pride over producing two brilliant and fairly acclaimed minds in Jade and Dist, though: "Dr. Balfour and Dr. Gneiss are honored sons, prodigies produced by our fair city" or something to that effect...! Jade kind of. Wishes they wouldn't put it like that, but oh well...

49. (cw for some mention of vague suicidal ideation here haha oof) Is Jade afraid of dying as a concept? Not really. Though he would still strongly prefer not to, and so would take every measure possible to ensure it doesn't happen...!

But it's a little funny, because the underlying reasoning in this general will to live has actually fluctuated quite a bit over the course of his life. Fundamentally, Jade doesn't want to die anytime soon because he still has things he wants to do--this has always been the case, and it always will be now. But there was a decent window of time, after he gave up on fomicry as a means of resurrecting Nebilim, where a quiet and underlying sort of self-loathing often wondered if he deserved to die anyhow. If the world would have been better off without him existing altogether, even...a feeling that really Very strongly reared its head when some terrible abuses of fomicry came to light over the course of canon. There's a point in Abyss where Jade outright expresses a wish that he could travel back in time and kill himself as a child, before he ever achieved any of his childhood feats of genius that would go on to impact so many lives in such thoroughly horrific ways :(

He doesn't have this wish anymore, though. The self-loathing is still there, and probably always will be...but Jade did come to realize that his existence and his actions did produce some bits of good alongside the bad. He cannot discount this fact, and he also cannot throw away the chance he has now to do more good, while he still lives and breathes currently. Especially when acting otherwise would be an immense disservice to those who died before they ever got a chance to really live, and do the things they wanted to do. The plight of short-lived replicas in general, and especially Luke's death after only seven years of being alive--while making every clear indication of wishing he could continue living--these were observed experiences that Jade has taken thoroughly to heart, and are now a sort of talisman he holds close to his chest against that self-loathing that's never really gone away. He can't atone, but he can still...try to do better, and he has to keep trying for as long as he possibly can. No taking an early out, no shying away from the task at hand. Since he still isn't afraid of dying, he wouldn't necessarily flinch from sacrificing himself for dear friends or a much greater good--but he'd also have to find that there's literally no other option at hand, and he's not above taking long-term risks if it means there's still a chance at survival later.

This is why he's fundamentally against the idea of destroying the captain at the expense of destroying themselves in Sail currently, btw! If he's taking that route he wants a guarantee on a way to do it without killing them all, or at the very least a similar guarantee that every other possible alternative avenue has been completely exhausted beforehand. Some of yall may have a death wish but he's actually actively trying to deny his own and doesn't care for seeing it in others ok...!

πŸ₯ : (This tidbit isn't even headcanon lmao but) Jade has always had a fascination with the anatomy of living things! This manifested in Very Unfortunate ways in his youth, as one of his favored childhood past-times was once killing monsters on the outskirts of town with fonic artes and then taking apart the corpses to figure out how the body parts worked. In later years he'd also become extremely well-versed in the anatomy of the human body, mostly thanks to the years he spent in his resurrection-obsession phase proctoring human experiments trying to troubleshoot the biology of flawed human replicas, alongside often needing to do things like pull more replica data from dead soldiers to further said research pursuits. (The rumors back home about him picking through corpses on battlefields wasn't entirely unfounded in that sense tbh....) By extension this does mean he can actually field basic medical assessments just mostly thanks to being well aware of How A Body Works, but Jade is still quick to assure any who ask that he's very much not that kind of doctor; in fact, he pleasantly points out at one point in canon that his skillset in this category is more fitting for a mortician than anything else. ...But yeah that aside, while he's long since outgrown that nasty childhood habit of just killing animals for fun willy-nilly, he does still have a rather off-puttingly keen interest in things like dissecting and taking samples from particularly interesting creature specimens he's never encountered before--you know, when a corpse of such a thing might happen to become available! It's actually really funny (and extremely fortunate) how the overall lack of living things besides passengers in Sail means nobody's seen this side of Jade in action yet LMAO....it was a close call on salamander island tho, if he wasn't so preoccupied about the upcoming heist he probably would have taken a scalpel to some critter or another there. Also we're not looking at him very briefly succumbing to his old bone-collecting habits wrt that one time after Skulduggery crashed a car off a cliffside that was an extenuating circumstance all around ok--

To dip into actual headcanon a bit, though...! And add something slightly less cursed to this smh: I also figure that Jade is moderately knowledgeable about styling long hair! Which some might find surprising, considering his general personality and the fact that he rarely does much with his own hair himself. When he was a child he ended up teaching himself how to do a few nice hair things for his younger sister, though, and the knowledge has stuck as a latent sort of thing. He got to tap into this recently on the ship via teaching Fio how to braid her hair......

18. Back home it'd mostly have been a sort of mental review of the day's events, or mulling over implications or latent suspicions about certain things he's noticed in interactions with others here and there. Usually he'd be writing physical notes about things in some form right before going to sleep, too, so in-bed thoughts after putting out the light for the night would just be a mental extension of that sort of process. In Sail it's still pretty much these things too! ...Though sometimes there's added worries about the rather grim outlook of everyone's overall current existence here/all the things that could possibly go wrong based off the sparse hints of upcoming excursions/whatever awfulness is transpiring currently/thoughts about home, sometimes. ...It all boils down to yet more reasons why Jade doesn't really sleep much on the whole, tbh, this big brain of his just does not shut up sometimes rip

27. In canon, and pretty much to this day, Jade's best friend was Peony Upala Malkuth IX. This is the current crown emperor of Malkuth! ...Jade literally broke into his house when they were children! It's, a long story, but to date Peony has always been one of the few people in Jade's life who actually almost completely understands how Jade ticks, as a general rule; in turn, he's also one of the few people who can generally engage Jade as a flat equal in snide troll combat, and when they aren't giving each other a hard time they both mutually value each other's insights quite a lot. Alas, in Sail Jade's had yet to find any one friend quite equivalent to Peony, though he does consider Tear as one of his closest and most trusted allies currently, thanks to all they went through together with the rest of their party over the course of canon events before finding themselves here.

As to worst enemy: It'd probably be Van Grants, back home, for the absolute awfulness he tried to pull in literally genociding the world's population to replace it all with replicas, setting aside the cruel things he also put Tear and Luke through. Though that problem has...been taken care of, by the end of canon. There's still kind of a lot of bitter baggage revolving around Dist for many reasons as well--especially being singlehandedly responsible for spreading around the means of using fomicry on human beings even after Jade tried to ban that knowledge--though after certain events even that vehemence has simmered down just a little. In Sail the captain is honestly still kind of Enemy #1 for myriad reasons, even if Jade isn't necessarily on board with taking him out just yet (see: the headcanon blurb wrt death and dying and how he'd Really Prefer Not To Thanks up above). The man may have had much less of a directly malicious hand in the last few events to befall the ship, but Jade still hasn't forgotten that he's still the one keeping everyone captive on this boat currently, and he also hasn't forgotten certain things like the battle royale, or his initial claim that he believes suffering provides greater power than joy. It'd sure be great if Skulduggery's belief in him being capable of change bears fruit, but that needs more time to actually be seen, and Jade's not about to stop being wary of things turning for the worse again anytime soon. Otherwise, though, he doesn't have any particularly strong outright beef with the other current passengers here just yet! So, at least, there's that...!

look, LOOK......when i say this guy was a freak as a child i was not exaggerating it was so bad

SO BAD

you've got this prodigy kid that basically never makes any facial expressions and hasn't cried since he was like four years old, by age five he's already starting to master fonic artes that adults struggle with, he's doing that terrifying shit to monsters on the outskirts of town...then by age eight he's suddenly got red eyes one day because apparently he applied a self-invented new method of boosting one's own magic prowess to himself (by carving unstable sigils into his own eyeballs), and every other kid in town and some extremely unsettled adults are accordingly starting to call him a demon child in the rumor mills. his Completely Normal Parents and Also Very Normal younger sister are just utterly at a loss.

age nine, he's invented magic cloning by successfully cloning a toy doll on the first try. age thirteen, he's cloned an Entire Human Being also. the human being clone immediately went on to accidentally become an atomically-unstable serial killer magic powerhouse but we don't have time to unpack all that--

gelda nebilim tried her best to instill some normal person traits + at least a lil empathy in this absolute gremlin kid and actually succeeded moderately before he accidentally killed her and would proceed to backslide for the next decade or so, but i mean......she's still one of the bigger reasons jade's like, only a fraction of the potentially terrifying person he could have been today smh my head. ALL THE SIGNS OF SOME REAL PSYCHOPATH VILLAIN HOURS WERE RIGHT THERE MAN...

πŸ‹ : Jade admittedly didn't have a strong commitment to three meals a day in daily life back home; the more absorbed he gets in a certain amount of work, the more he tends to forget his own appetite, and the more likely he is to skip multiple meals in a day or just sort of snack sparingly between tasks. But when traveling with the rest of the party over the course of the game he probably ended up tracking meals a lot more closely! Just by virtue of certain other whiny youths being prone to complaining the moment they go too long without a food break of some kind smh. And now that he's on the ship, he's currently experiencing rather a lot more downtime than he's used to (you know, between The Horrors), so sitting down for some form of meal three times a day has actually become yet another way to pass that time with some very vague form of productivity, alongside it adding just a little more structure to an otherwise pretty aimless day (again, when there aren't The Horrors).

While Jade's not opposed to eating out sometimes, he'd usually cook for himself while living on his own, even despite the fact that he almost definitely had at least a couple servants at home in Grand Chokmah who'd be obliged to do it for him. He's Pretty Decent at cooking, too! As he mostly views it as just another particularly edible form of chemistry that can be interesting to mess around with, at the end of the day. He's part of the "why doesn't this boat at least have a kitchen to fiddle with ugh" coalition tbqh 😀 ...Though...when cooking for others he has a bad habit of Experimenting.....nothing lethal or overtly unpleasant, ofc, but you know!! How long would it take for someone notice their least favorite food being in a dish if it were seasoned or plated this certain way? How would this very mild poison react to this broth, and the person drinking it? If he substituted this for that, would a picky eater be able to tell?? Always be at least a little wary if Jade is cooking for you or handing you a weird new drink folks, even friends are not entirely safe--

Apparently his least favorite foods are anything containing pork or rappig meat, while his more favored foods are salmon, tofu, and wine (which is totally also a food ofc). Alongside these established canon preferences, I figure that in general Jade's probably quite inclined towards seafoods on the whole alongside salmon, especially sushi and the like! I imagine one of Keterburg's few claims to capital back in the day was a moderately robust fishing economy, positioned close to the sea as it was, so many of his childhood meals probably reflected as much. He also tends to incline towards healthier plates than not with a decent amount of greens, and smaller servings; not so big on sugary things at all, generally, though he does have just a bit of a soft spot for peppermint-flavored things and hot chocolate. There may or may not be very early memories of gathering in the schoolhouse with Nephry and Peony and Saphir after a long cold day roaming outdoors, and warming by the hearth while Professor Nebilim would prepare mugs for everyone...

πŸ‘ : He's definitely more meticulous than not when it comes to appearances! It's not even that Jade's necessarily fussed about his physical self-image, particularly--he just likes being put-together on a given day, because it's comfortable, and dovetails nicely with his preference to conduct himself professionally in company even when he's not actually working most days. So, he's certainly cleanly and takes good care of his hair and keeps himself clean-shaven and even likes wearing cologne normally, etc etc. No makeup applied or anything tho (this flawless complexion is 100% natural babey ✨✨) Outside his uniform he also generally prefers clothing that skews more towards the business casual/formal end of the scale than not.

It should be noted that none of this is to the point of impracticality, though! Sensibility and efficiency still takes priority at the end of the day for Jade ofc, and so if necessity demands sacrificing the time for certain appearances and such, he wouldn't be too distraught about it. This also means that on a normal basis he actually rather impressively doesn't take very long to get ready for the day in the mornings at all! Gotta be speedy about these things when you're in the military lmao

13. He has no overt disabilities or long-term illnesses or allergies and such...! But I headcanon that he does have at least one pretty goddamn gnarly scar, so imma talk to you some more about that yes hehehe B)))) It's hinted in canon text, and further established in side content, that the last experiment Jade attempted before giving up on resurrection by fomicry failed so spectacularly that it straight up almost killed him! Explicitly, because it involved attempting to draw replica data with memory attached via pulling memory particles pertaining to the subject directly from himself; when the process backfired, those memory particles also backfired, essentially sort of exploding from several fon slots especially in his torso area. Extremely fortunately for him, this occurred in a lab environment and there were Seventh fonists pretty close at hand, but I feel the damage could have been severe and fraught enough with residual memory particle Weirdness that the healing process couldn't entirely close the wounds before scarring set in.

This left a large and messy sort of gash down the center of his chest, as well as a second gash of weirdly matching shape down his back. Nowadays they look sort of like burn scars, but not quite; they've also healed about as much as they're going to by now, and will probably never entirely fade at this point. Almost nobody knows about these scars really, except for whoever was on the scene at the time of the lab accident, and for his own part Jade would rather prefer to keep it that way. Which is fortunately pretty easy most days, considering his natural preference for sleeved layers. He'd basically have to be shirtless for them to be visible, which he pretty much never is in company anyway! So!! There's an easy way to dodge any inevitable questioning about What Happened right there!!! (Hohoho maybe the bath robe spa costume wasn't just about hiding the Peony-assigned speedo huh though tbf the speedo is still infinitely more terrible lbr)

26. Jade's biggest regret is still inventing fomicry, at the end of the day, even if he's been trying to come to terms with the fact that it did produce some good things--like Luke, who never would have existed at all without it. (To say nothing of how it almost certainly had a hand in breaking the Score + its doomsday predictions wrt the plague-ridden fall of Malkuth, too, but Jade...still. Does not like to think about that tidbit. So let's not, actually--!) Fomicry aside, Jade also fundamentally regrets killing Professor Nebilim with his own arrogant carelessness as a child, on top of refusing to truly let her rest for so many years afterwards. To think of how he could have spent that near-decade of time he burned on fruitless resurrection doing literally anything else more productive...it's still a pretty bitter notion to this day, but there's nothing to be done about that now, save to move forward and try to do better from here on out.

38. Nerd Shit, tbh, in keeping with his fundamental Huge Nerd nature. Analyzing aspects of fonology or workshopping fonic artes, either on paper or by physical casting trial-and-error, are things that Jade genuinely enjoys! And they also tend to demand a level of complexity that takes up enough brain mileage to drown out whatever it is that's actually bugging and draining him for at least a small window of time. Writing in general is also a little therapeutic to him in this sense, actually, especially on the ship where pastime variety is a bit thin on the ground otherwise. Of course, he's also writing about Nerd Shit pretty much all the time, so to the outside eye it's just the driest stuff imaginable...but shut up he just enjoys doing it! Ok!!

......Lately he's also found that hanging out with (and/or being affectionately obnoxious at) friends can be a pleasant recharge-distraction in its own way too. Literally never admitting this out loud though--
