Handwaved CR Meme

The passengers have been living on this ship for a while now, and it's likely that they've fallen into certain habits and routines. Little things have become part of their day, from lunch dates with friends, to quiet nights in the library, or long-standing blood feuds. Even the newest passengers have likely found themselves some common haunts and familiar faces. This is a meme to talk about, flesh out, and collaborate on some of those behind-the-scenes moments and routines!

1. Post a comment with your character, and give us an idea of what sort of things they get up to around the ship! Be as detailed or as vague as you'd like.
2. Talk about what kind of handwaved CR you can inspire! Is your character the type to stop and chat with friends on the promenade? Are they consistently the highest score on multiple arcade cabinets? IDK, you tell me!
3. When you look at other characters' routines, you might notice some moments that line up! Even if your characters are total strangers, they might see each other at the buffet every day, or maybe they're unwittingly competing for the high score on DDR. And close CR might mean weekly dinners, book clubs, sparring sessions every morning... like I said, this is where you shine!!
4. This is also a good chance to handwave characters exchanging contact information, generating some more inbox threads!

TLDR: write about your character's life on the ship and then compare notes with other people, find CR, ???, profit

Big fan of assumed / handwaved cr and interactions, so come at me with anything!!

Jeff generally comes in two modes: 1) cheerful, friendly, outgoing, big Golden Retriever energy... or 2) barely holding it together, dazed, distracted, dreamy, in which case he'll be keeping to himself. More often than not, though, he presents a cheerful face, so it's always safe to assume he's at least said HI!!! to your character, even if we haven't interacted yet.

BARD SHIT

Jeff doesn't have much of a daily routine, and will often change things up. But one major, consistent theme in his regular activities is music. Anywhere there's music, there's Jeff! Find him dancing at Rischie (he's not a great dancer, but he's an enthusiastic one), or enjoying karaoke hour at Chatterbox. He'll also frequent John's to listen to the piano, whether it's the ghost pianist or other characters playing. While he's still not a fan of Billy Joel, and will occasionally complain about it, he's mellowed out a bit. Come by at the right time and you'll even find Jeff practicing the piano -- he isn't very experienced with it, but he's trying his best! If your character is a skilled pianist, Jeff may ask them for lessons and tips.

He can often be found practicing his guitar at Bellona Theater, though sometimes he'll change it up and plug in his amp and practice, uh.... wherever he can, really. If there's an outlet, there's a chance that Jeff will be there, playing! He's usually playing original compositions, very much in the alternative and indie rock styles, with inspo derived from new wave, post punk, experimental, annnnd so on. He will play more folk and classic rock inspired stuff, too, depending on his mood.

Jeff also loves to sing! You can come across him singing anywhere, everywhere, any time. If he isn't singing original compositions, he may be singing tunes from all the way up to 1995 -- along with the occasional Taylor Swift. He was exposed to her music in his past game and totally loves her.

Jeff can also be found working on lyrics and compositions and writing notes on magical theory in quieter places: the library, Sand Dollars, the deck, etc. One thing to note is that while he's a very skilled musician, his lyrics tend to be vapid, juvenile, silly. He clearly wasn't the poet in his band.

As a bard, Jeff blends music and magic together, so any time he's singing or noodling on his guitar (or both), there's a very good chance that he'll be casting spells. Most of the time, this manifests as silly light spells, very minor illusions, telekinesis -- at times, he can affect moods, but he'll only do that with permission. Jeff's going to be experimenting more with his magic, and trying to develop new spells. Want to be a guinea pig?

For reference, his biggest musical influences and inspirations are Pixies, Siouxsie, Echo & the Bunnymen, Meat Puppets, Hole, Dinosaur Jr, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, Jesus and Mary Chain, Wall of Voodoo, The Smithereens, The Cure, Primus -- and for more classic rock, it's Fleetwood Mac, Queen, David Bowie, Frank Zappa, 60s and 70s folk / hippie / protest music from his parents, etc. So there are times that Jeff will be practicing covers of songs from these artists, or working on tunes that your character may be able to clock as having been inspired by these artists. Jeff's always happy to talk shop and geek out over music, and (with the exception of his irrational hatred of Billy Joel) will pretty much respect and appreciate everyone's taste in music.

SLICE OF LIFE

Like most folks, Jeff usually takes his meals at Windjammer. He doesn't eat with much regularity, and only seems to hit up the buffet when he remembers it's been a bit too long between meals, so he can be found there at pretty much any time of the day or night. Also, Jeff's recently gone vegetarian! He's still figuring out how to navigate it without just eating nothing but carbs, so you can find him putting together meal experiments with the selection at Windjammer.

New hobby alert! Jeff's learning how to sew and alter clothes, because he just can't accept a wardrobe full of Tommy Bahama. If he's gonna be trapped here forever, he might as well pick up some new skills. You can find him at Tommy Bahama, picking out clothes to practice on, or working on new threads in various places around the ship.

He got a side job as a makeup artist in the last place he was at, and it's fun! He likes doing it! So Jeff will sometimes set up shop in Sand Dollars or other chill places and offer to do people's makeup or nails for them.

Jeff will go on semi-regular drinking binges, especially in times of stress. When this happens, you can find him... anywhere that serves alcohol. And places that don't! He'll get messy. Very messy. Jeff can be found wandering into the wrong cabins, drunkenly swimming, dancing on tables, raiding Scoops, taking over the karaoke machine, etc. Feel free to make up just about any kind of chaotic offscreen encounter.

Sometimes, Jeff hangs out at Playback, mostly playing any 80s or 90s arcade games. He avoids shooters and really seems to like Rampage. He'll pretty much always play as Ralph the wolf.

He enjoys swimming and hanging out by the pool. He's not there all the time, but he probably takes a swim a couple times a week.

Jeff likely spends a lot of time around Bash (but not, like, so much time that he's smothering the guy), because Bash is his Person. It's probably abundantly obvious that Jeff's in love.

LITTLE DETAILS

Jeff's pretty openly and unapologetically queer, which is a big deal to him, since he's from the early-mid 90s. Now that he's got the freedom to experiment and express himself safely, Jeff's taken to incorporating nail polish, makeup, skirts, dresses, and other 'feminine'-coded fashions, and mixing/matching it with the grungy 90s aesthetic he arrived with. So he's kind of grunge-glam in his presentation these days.

Jeff very likely has undiagnosed ADHD! He's totally unaware of it.

You'll pretty much never find him at the gym or other sporty areas.

Jeff thinks he's stupid and is pretty insecure about it. He won't often be found reading any books, though he might pick some up from time to time, before getting frustrated and giving up pretty quickly.

Anyway, piano time in John's? Johnny hasn't played piano since he was 16, and he has...feelings...about it, but he's been noodling around.

Also, pool time with Undine has happened at least a couple times. Perhaps complete with gushing fondly about their partners.

Oh no. Another adoptive sibling. How awful. Whatever shall she do?

There's a few weird things about her life that'll start to slip the more they talk. But some of those might be best threaded. Still...
- She has never left the city she was born in. As far as she knows, no one has
- Magical girls fight monsters every night, 10pm-2am
- She goes to a school only for magical girls
- She's been fighting monsters since she was 12 (she's 15 now)

Number 6 will teach him sewing as long as he wants it. However, Number 6 very clearly has a rigid idea of how men/women are supposed to dress so maybe Jeff can help him challenge that some more?

yesss I'm all for sewing lessons and challenging 6's idea of gender presentation! depending on how it goes, Jeff could either be really laid back and patient, or get upset and slip into REBELLIOUS YOUTH mode and just try to shock and annoy Number 6--

--but ultimately he does like the guy, so even if they wind up offending each other, Jeff won't hold a grudge

The good news is that Johnny has already been working pretty hard on getting 6 to open his mind up, so Jeff has a much better shot of getting him to chill than if they were doing this a few months ago.

Oh my god. Please introduce Arthur to the sweet strains of the electric guitar. I think he would hate it, and then it would end up massively growing on him.

Arthur's close to Bash as well, so it's likely he and Jeff may have run into each other a couple of times in his company, maybe at Windjammer.

Also, even though neither of them are aware they have it lol, if Jeff is likely to see someone with combined-type adhd symptoms and think "hey, same hat", then Arthur sure has the same hat.

also I just want to note that Jeff was probably in total EXCITED PUPPY MODE if he met Arthur in Bash's company, which... might be A Lot, but look, he means well. he just loves making friends and he wants to make friends with anyone important to his people!!

(and I'm so down for him eventually catching on to some similarities in their ADHD brains, though it might take Jeff a bit. does Bash have a type? it seems like he might have a type...)

EXCUSE ME, BASH DOES NTO HAVE A TYPE, he's not even openly admitting to being into Arthur anymore, given how thoroughly he was turned down. This is strictly a platonic friendship.

He will also be pretty interested in hearing Jeff's music, though he will be slightly wary of the spell qualities because it brushes close to mind-altering which is a thing he's always a little spooked by. Karaoke though! He's all in!

and luckily, he won't be doing any mind altering magic unless asked, and will mostly stick to fluffy silly magic tricks. but I'm all for the subject coming up, just so Jeff can sort of... have a think about the ethical issues of some of the stuff he used to do with magic. let's dive into the mess!

I am definitely here for Crichton sharing his side of why messing with people's heads is an ethical issue. Learning and growing.
