TEST DRIVE MEME #1

1. now it's fun to wake up in a strange chateau
[you wake up.
it doesn't matter where you were before. going to bed? dying? opening the door to face a great evil? same result. you wake up in a soft bed with starched sheets in a cool, darkened room, sunlight peeking out from behind thick curtains. maybe you're alone; maybe you aren't. maybe you immediately notice the folded paper on the bedside table near your head. if you don't, you better fix that real quick: you won't be able to even open the door before you read it.
the note itself is written in a neat hand on white card stock; there is a stylized logo of a ship with the words SERENA ETERNA printed underneath. the note reads as follows:
Dear Passenger(s),
As your cruise director, it is my great honor to welcome you aboard the Serena Eterna, your destination for fun and adventure! We know you could have chosen any cruise line for your vacation, and we're very grateful you chose ours! On behalf of the Captain, I would like to assure each and every passenger that will we do whatever it takes to fulfill all your needs and desires during your journey with us.
At your earliest possible convenience, please attend the mandatory lifeboat drill by the end of the day. I'm sure everyone is very eager to get started on all the fun and sun, but safety always comes first! You can find your life jacket in your cabin's closet; carry it to your assigned muster station on deck one, where I will take you through the drill. If you can't find me in the crowd, just look for the gal with the winning smile!
See You Real Soon!
Sincerely,
Gal Friday
you walk to deck one. you have no other choice: every time you try to step in a direction some unseen being considers "not towards deck one," you find your legs no longer move, staying stock still, frozen. whether compelled quickly by curiosity, or delayed by pure stubbornness, the result is the same, and you are left milling around with other similarly curious or stubborn people.
you see someone in uniform near the front of the crowd. she seems to be a gal, but is missing the winning smile, along with most of her other features. she seems to see you, though, rushing to your side and placing a lei around your neck with great formality. a voice, cheery but artificial, sees to come from nowhere and everywhere.]
Welcome aboard! We're so glad to have you!
[you touch the lei. rooster feathers, lotus seeds, and a carved circle of something white and hard, linked onto a silk string.]
2. messing with my mind was fun at the time
[freshly lei'd, your legs are forced to lead out onto the deck and towards your muster station. the same woman is there, carrying a clipboard. this time, she introduces herself as Gal Friday, the cruise director, before immediately going into the muster drill spiel. it is very boring, and you are not allowed to move, except when you are required to show you know how to put your life vest on. you could try to not do this, but Friday will move to stand in front of you very closely and just. look in your direction until such a time that you decide to do it. and I'm sure your fellow passengers want you to just get on with it, too.
but, once it ends? she reiterates her desire to welcome you aboard. and, then, you're free.
well, free to move about the ship at your own leisure, of course. which is a kind of free, and probably the best one you can hope for. you could try to escape, maybe, if you have the means to; Friday certainly won't be one to stop you. that's what the barrier is for, after all.
but, wouldn't you much rather have fun?
the buffet is full. the pool is open. the casino jingles and chimes.
welcome aboard.]
3. lots of mystery in the history of the devils I knew
[you were never alone.
a few days have passed since you first arrived on the Serena Eterna. perhaps you've made yourself a little routine, and settled in a bit. or maybe you haven't done that at all. either way, you're here, and it looks like somebody is pretty pissed off about it.
it starts small. sometimes nearby plates skid off tables, or a pool chair upends while you're walking next to it. and sometimes that chair is aimed right at your head. objects are moving with quickly increasing frequency, and a wide variety of styles: some are dropped, or pushed, and others and others are tossed, but a few of the items are thrown, with great force and odd accuracy. if Friday is around during the lighter moments, she simply titters and cleans up whatever mess is made. if a pot of soup sails off the buffet line and nearly drenches you in boiling minestrone, she simply walks away.
and then there's the voices. hundreds, maybe thousands, calling out. not all are intelligible English, but you seem to understand them anyway. some sound scared, or angry. some are screams, others whispers. some sound entirely strange, while others are achingly familiar. and they're all saying the same exact thing:
Get Out.]

[ Gin wakes up slowly, rubbing his head and trying to curl back under the blankets at the sound of someone shuffling around. When Childe speaks, he sits up, slowly blinking with a truely impressive bedhead of ruffled brown hair. The gaze that meets Childe is sleepy and without any recognition. Gin stares for as second before he looks down and realizes the majority of his costume, mask, hooded cape and gloves are lying on a small table beside him. ]
...! [ Silently, the kid dashes for the clothes, shoving them on with an urgency that total ignores Childe's evaluative expression. It's only after his face is covered and the gloves are in place that he turns to address Childe. ]
Of course not, woof! Raaah, did you kidnap me, scarfy!? I won't forgive you, meow!
oh no an actual baby
Now hold on, I'm in the same boat as you. Literally. [ the way that the boy speaks is... certainly unique, but he's been around enough little kids often enough that he can write it off as some kind of make-believe sort of game, and he's not the kind of asshole that would debase or make fun of him for it.
he has to wonder if it's a dog or a cat he's talking to, though. ]
I didn't wake up all that long ago, and I promise I didn't kidnap you. You're free to believe whatever you like, but before you do that you should probably read the note.
[ he lays down said note on the nightstand before retreating a safe enough distance away so as to appear nonthreatening. he'll even put his hands behind his back to humor his new cabinmate. ]
no subject
[ Not that this guy seems bad at first glance... Gin isn't good at predicting people sometimes, it made getting along with his classmates hard, but this stranger had promised. Promises were a pretty serious thing.
The note doesn't illuminate much. A cruise...? Vacation...? A cruise would be pretty crowded, Gin wasn't sure he'd like that. He didn't even let his mom take him to Shibuya. ]
Well...if you're kidnapped like me then big sis would call you an ally, meow! So even if you're lying, I can work with you. I'm Gin Ibushi, woof! A sixth grader.
no subject
rather than be offended that he doesn't seem to have won him entirely over - being suspected of lying despite everything wasn't exactly a clean victory, he thinks, and sounds more like a compromise with Gin saying he could work with him - Childe only finds himself laughing and shaking his head. smart kid. though he supposes that comes with the whole "been kidnapped before" experience. ]
An ally, huh? I'll take it. My name is Tartaglia - [ he pauses, realizing that that might be a mouthful, though his nickname isn't much better for other reasons. ] - but you can call me Childe. It's nice to meet you, Gin. Have you ever been on a boat this big before?
II.
The store clerk is seen speaking to Zhongli, but the ex-geo archon is barely paying attention, enough so that the clerk eventually gets tired of speaking and has to return to behind the registers to get themselves some water. ]
no subject
some things never change. ]
I hope you know that my money's no good here. [ he says by way of greeting, and while it's easy enough to navigate his way over to the man's side to see what exactly he's looking at, the smile on his face is the sort that just barely reaches his eyes.
even if this was some sort of vivid hallucination, that doesn't mean he has to forgive past transgressions so easily. definitely not without the proper apology. ]
no subject
The greeting now is quite nostalgic, reminiscent of a time when they could have perhaps been considered friends. Despite seeing that half-hearted smile, Zhongli simply smiles warmly in return. He hasn't forgotten how upset Childe was when he left, and it's no surprise to see him mostly likely now still holding onto those feelings and struggling with them. ]
Childe, it has been some time since we last met, has it not? Have you been well? [ the Northland Bank employees never seemed to have much information on Childe's whereabouts or his status once he had left Liyue. For Zhongli, it admittedly took some months to adjust to the idea that he may well never see the other again (—not that he would admit to such.)
That is how life works— fleeting, ebbing, and flowing—afterall.
... Yet, it also works in mysterious ways, as well, such as having them meet once again on this strange ship that is quite obviously a very long way from their homeworld, of all places.
He can't help but wonder if there is any hidden significance to their unexpected reunion. Only time may tell. ]
no subject
there was no need to make nice for the sake of his mission. to try and play at being friends after what had happened between them would just be insulting.
it wasn't as though he especially held a grudge, but he wasn't going to go out of his way to associate himself with Zhongli again unless he really had to. ]
It seems like you're acclimating to our situation well enough. This isn't some top secret adepti thing I don't know about, is it?
[ does he mean the ship or Zhongli's adaptability? who knows. he supposes when one is (or was) a literal god, there wasn't a whole lot to be concerned about. ]
no subject
—And avoidant of any future encounters, if he is so inclined. ]
It is not. [ he says matter of factly without looking for clarification on what Childe is referring to. ] It is simply what comes with time. [ there's no long spiel explaining such further like usual. In fact, for once, he would rather not. ]
This ship is quite fascinating with all its amenities, it seems best to be familiar with it in case anything troublesome is to happen. I do not suppose in your exploration of this place you have come across any others from Teyvat?
no subject
either way, he's not going to address it, and Zhongli probably wouldn't, either, so it doesn't really matter.
the question hangs in the air between them and he considers how to answer. given that Zhongli had never left the city and never really kept any company that Childe wasn't aware of - though that could change, given how long it'd been since he'd left Liyue until now - he doubted the man would know anyone that he might have happened to meet.
so he shakes his head. ]
This place is pretty big. If you're looking for someone in particular, I wouldn't give up hope just yet.
[ and then, because he can't help himself, since finding Zhongli in a fancy gem shop is exactly what he would have expected: ]
Is that what you're doing? Familiarizing yourself with all the fascinating, pretty stones?
no subject
Yes. How could I miss the opportunity to see rare stones that may not exist in Teyvat? This is a rare chance that is truly hard to come by. [ he moves to walk by Childe now, only adding to his words as their shoulders barely brush against each other in the process. ] Anything beyond that, I am sure you would rather discover on your own.
[ As much as he would love to say he's really simply ogling shiny items like he would back home, it's not quite the case here. ] I am heading to the next shop now. There are so many to visit, an old man like myself needs to get a head start.
You are welcome to come, otherwise I will not be offended if you choose to continue with your own agenda. [ It doesn't seem as if Zhongli is tired with Childe, angry at him, or anything of the sort. It's merely typical distance between mere acquaintances, like when they first met in Liyue.
Polite, cordial, and brief in public. There's no sense holding Childe and his time hostage. ]

punches you but also two
A Vision - hydro, neatly attached to a belt around the waist of a man she doesn't recognize and who certainly doesn't look like he's from Liyue. Still, the fact he's from Teyvat makes him more approachable then most everyone else on this ship.
Not that Shenhe is exactly sure how to start this conversation. Even after spending more time with Liyue, speaking to anyone without a goal or purpose is... difficult. It's easier to be quiet and observe, which is why she just. Stares at Childe. It's unlikely the man knows any more about their situation then she does, and she doesn't really need the help or comfort of a stranger, but that Vision on his belt keeps her attention from wandering.
Eventually, assuming Childe doesn't notice her first, she'll speak up.]
...You're from Teyvat.
[She's nailing it. She's sure Cloud Retainer would be proud, starting conversations with humans and not fights.]
my first time tagging shenhe.... uguu...
Shenhe catches him right as he's draped over the railing on the deck, a hand pressed out to feel for himself the barrier keeping them all locked in and how much force he can apply before he starts to feel it in his wrist. he knows better than to actually push hard enough to break his hand, but that's not going to keep him from considering the prospect.
he notices her only as a lingering presence in the corners of his eyes until he realizes that she's not going to be leaving any time soon. then he glances up, catching the way she stares at him and canting his head to the side right before she speaks.
someone else from Teyvat shouldn't be very surprising, given he'd just met Zhongli not too long ago. but he's quite sure that he's never seen her before in his entire life. so much for the "this is all some really weird dream" theory. ]
I am. [ he doesn't deny it. why should he? ] What gave it away? [ it's probably the Vision. that she doesn't immediately mark him for a Fatuus says more than it needs to. ]
no subject
Still, maybe this is… a normal line of conversation.]
You have a Vision.
[She’s never had much experience with the Fatui - she had heard whispers of them during her time in the harbor because people liked to talk. She only has vague knowledge that the Fatui were behind unleashing Osial and hasn’t dealt with any Fatuus personally, yet, but like most things she only knows the bare bones of it.
It doesn’t bother her much, at least.]
Though I don’t recognize the casing it’s in.
[It’s different from what houses her own Vision and the Visions of everyone she’s met so far, so she imagines it has to mean something.]
no subject
[ silver hair, multicolored eyes... definitely not anyone normal. even if her clothes place her as a Liyuen there's too much about her that's above the norm for that place, comparable only to the likes of the Qixing. on the front, at least, he can't spot her Vision so he can't make a fair assessment, but if he had to guess ... maybe on her back or in her hair?
his hand pulls away from the barrier and he turns to put his back against the railing and look over at the young woman. if she were from Liyue he doubted she'd have any kind words for him if she found out he was Fatui and had been directly involved with the Osial incident. revealing himself to her would serve no purpose but neither would hiding his allegiances, and with no Traveler to concern himself with the option for either was left entirely up to him.
maybe in due time. if it ended up culminating in a fight, even better. ]
Going by looks alone -- [ a cursory sweep over her form, respectfully. ] -- I'd say you hail from Liyue. Am I wrong?
no subject
[You know the ones. Not those other mountains.
Slowly, she nods.]
No, I am. [From Liyue, that is. She's doing her best.] My name is Shenhe. And you are...?
[...
It's so much easier to talk to people when she knows them, and this conversation isn't like many she's had before so it's not like she knows what to expect. Most people she's met have treated her so differently then him, as well. It's all so odd but it almost reminds her of the Traveler, somehow. He doesn't regard her as an adeptus and isn't treating her like she's something she's not... Hopefully it's a trend that continues in this place. It won't exactly make her happy to be here, but there's something undeniably appealing about just being Shenhe.]
no subject
(he does)
it's easy to see how difficult it is for the woman - Shenhe, his mind supplies automatically - to hold a conversation, and he wonders if his assumption that she might hail from Jueyen Karst is accurate. while he was never able to actually get into that sacred domain himself, he knew enough about the general whereabouts of the home of the adepti.
of course he could be completely off the mark and wrong since there were a lot of mountains in Liyue, but who knows. ]
Tartaglia. [ he replies. he considers leaving it at that, but the poor girl's nervous enough already. ] But you can call me Childe.
no subject
Is there one you prefer over the other?
[Odd names, as if the man wasn't off enough already. A strange foreign man who knows Liyue - which isn't exactly shocking considering it's a huge hub for trade, but still.
There's something about him that sets him apart.]
...
[...
Oh, right.]
But it's nice to meet you, Childe.
[Almost forgot her manners! He hasn't made her want to resort to violence (yet), so she should be nice(?).]

I
a stranger in a green cape and bard's outfit, idly plucking at a lyre and humming to a wordless song, looking just about as serene and casual as anyone could be, waking in a strange location and apparently out at sea. archon or not, venti similarly has no idea what's going on. on the other hand--! ] Memory? As in, I assume, you don't recall boarding a leisure cruise so suddenly like this either, right?
Nooope, I don't either. But I'm used to waking up strange places with little knowledge of how I got there!
[ either by drinking so disastrously hard he passes out and might be kicked out a pub by the owner, or knights/millelith, or... well, going into hibernation and waking up centuries later to a world that may have drastically changed through his slumber. that kind of thing. anyway, he seems to be pretty easy-going about whatever's going on. he's just like that. ]
no subject
unless this really was just a dream. it's hard to say either way.
regardless, there's a familiarity to this stranger that he can't quite place, and he's not sure if it's because the outfit he's wearing would be similar to what might be found in a handful of cities in Teyvat or something else entirely. from where he's sitting, at least, he can't spot any kind of Vision on the bard's person, but he's seen them tucked into strange places so it might just be the angle. ]
I guess we're in the same boat then. [ a pause. ] Literally.
Though I wouldn't go so far as to call this a leisure cruise. That might be a little too generous, especially for a kidnapping.
no subject
in the meantime his green eyes flicker down to childe's own vision at his hip; there's a twitch to his mouth, his catlike smile as he kicks his feet a little, apparently perfectly idle and at ease, kidnapping or not. ] Same boat it is, my clever stranger~ and by leisure, I might mean I'm usually at leisure anyway. [ as an absentee god, or ex-god. but who's to possibly know? ] Maybe it's a kidnapping, maybe it's a forced cruise vacation. Who can say!
[ maybe it's a kidnapping specifically in childe's case. the stealing away of a child... e. ]
Maybe the captain? [ as he taps at his own folded letter, which he's tucked in his hat. it seems even investigating the captain was less crucial to him than... playing a song in bed, apparently. ]
disowns u
As much as I don't think I've done anything to warrant a proper vacation, I like your optimism.
[ listing the captain as a suspect in this mass kidnapping is a good thought, and one that he files away for later when he's inevitably able to explore the boat and all the amenities and things on board. he's familiar enough with them to know that the vessel they're on is massive and he doesn't doubt that he'll be spending a decent amount of time just trying to get his bearings. ]
My name is Tartaglia, by the by.
but im not even the child(e) here
If you're going to find the captain, I could keep you company. [ this person... easygoing as venti is, he isn't an ignorant. the wind has its way of finding information, and the fatui aren't exactly super subtle with their naming scheme.
one of the harbingers had taken his gnosis, after all. he might just have some reason to keep a casual eye on childe. ]
no subject
[ he's definitely teasing, despite their situation - or perhaps because of it. but Childe's never really been one to panic or stress about the unknown, either due to his experiences in being a Harbinger or because it's a challenge he's more than happy to overcome, so it really shouldn't be surprising he's treating this much the same way. ]
That's definitely one way to look at it. I wouldn't mind having a few words with the captain, because if they're the sort that's skilled enough to get me onto a boat without my knowledge then I definitely want to meet them. I can only imagine how strong they are.
