TEST DRIVE MEME #1

1. now it's fun to wake up in a strange chateau

[you wake up.

it doesn't matter where you were before. going to bed? dying? opening the door to face a great evil? same result. you wake up in a soft bed with starched sheets in a cool, darkened room, sunlight peeking out from behind thick curtains. maybe you're alone; maybe you aren't. maybe you immediately notice the folded paper on the bedside table near your head. if you don't, you better fix that real quick: you won't be able to even open the door before you read it.

the note itself is written in a neat hand on white card stock; there is a stylized logo of a ship with the words SERENA ETERNA printed underneath. the note reads as follows:

Dear Passenger(s),

As your cruise director, it is my great honor to welcome you aboard the
Serena Eterna, your destination for fun and adventure! We know you could have chosen any cruise line for your vacation, and we're very grateful you chose ours! On behalf of the Captain, I would like to assure each and every passenger that will we do whatever it takes to fulfill all your needs and desires during your journey with us.

At your earliest possible convenience, please attend the mandatory lifeboat drill by the end of the day. I'm sure everyone is very eager to get started on all the fun and sun, but safety always comes first! You can find your life jacket in your cabin's closet; carry it to your assigned muster station on deck one, where I will take you through the drill. If you can't find me in the crowd, just look for the gal with the winning smile!

See You Real Soon!

Sincerely,
Gal Friday

you walk to deck one. you have no other choice: every time you try to step in a direction some unseen being considers "not towards deck one," you find your legs no longer move, staying stock still, frozen. whether compelled quickly by curiosity, or delayed by pure stubbornness, the result is the same, and you are left milling around with other similarly curious or stubborn people.

you see someone in uniform near the front of the crowd. she seems to be a gal, but is missing the winning smile, along with most of her other features. she seems to see you, though, rushing to your side and placing a lei around your neck with great formality. a voice, cheery but artificial, sees to come from nowhere and everywhere.]

Welcome aboard! We're so glad to have you!

[you touch the lei. rooster feathers, lotus seeds, and a carved circle of something white and hard, linked onto a silk string.]

2. messing with my mind was fun at the time

[freshly lei'd, your legs are forced to lead out onto the deck and towards your muster station. the same woman is there, carrying a clipboard. this time, she introduces herself as Gal Friday, the cruise director, before immediately going into the muster drill spiel. it is very boring, and you are not allowed to move, except when you are required to show you know how to put your life vest on. you could try to not do this, but Friday will move to stand in front of you very closely and just. look in your direction until such a time that you decide to do it. and I'm sure your fellow passengers want you to just get on with it, too.

but, once it ends? she reiterates her desire to welcome you aboard. and, then, you're free.

well, free to move about the ship at your own leisure, of course. which is a kind of free, and probably the best one you can hope for. you could try to escape, maybe, if you have the means to; Friday certainly won't be one to stop you. that's what the barrier is for, after all.

but, wouldn't you much rather have fun?

the buffet is full. the pool is open. the casino jingles and chimes.

welcome aboard.]

3. lots of mystery in the history of the devils I knew

[you were never alone.

a few days have passed since you first arrived on the Serena Eterna. perhaps you've made yourself a little routine, and settled in a bit. or maybe you haven't done that at all. either way, you're here, and it looks like somebody is pretty pissed off about it.

it starts small. sometimes nearby plates skid off tables, or a pool chair upends while you're walking next to it. and sometimes that chair is aimed right at your head. objects are moving with quickly increasing frequency, and a wide variety of styles: some are dropped, or pushed, and others and others are tossed, but a few of the items are thrown, with great force and odd accuracy. if Friday is around during the lighter moments, she simply titters and cleans up whatever mess is made. if a pot of soup sails off the buffet line and nearly drenches you in boiling minestrone, she simply walks away.

and then there's the voices. hundreds, maybe thousands, calling out. not all are intelligible English, but you seem to understand them anyway. some sound scared, or angry. some are screams, others whispers. some sound entirely strange, while others are achingly familiar. and they're all saying the same exact thing:

Get Out.]

[ That earlier theory about this bloke being only a bookshop acquaintance of Fell's just exploded. ]

It means whatever I want it to mean! I'm a free agent... Alec Crowley.

[ What were the odds of running into yet another Crowley on this cruise of misgivings? ]

That even your real name?

[personal profile] scotch_egg 2022-03-11 02:58 am (UTC)(link)

Then you're not a demon are you. [hands in his pockets he smirks at him before he makes his way past him in the narrow corridor]

Aye. It is. Part of it anyway. Is that a problem?
serpentinthegarden: (How are you call me out)

[personal profile] serpentinthegarden 2022-03-11 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't work that way... I might be a free agent these days but I'm still Fallen, unforgivable.

[ By all but a certain Angel, as far as he knew, which sent him on an upset pace across the length of the carpet runner clad corridor. ]

Its a problem. How do you even know all of this? You're no friend of Fell's... You're what? Some kind of spy?
scotch_egg: (moe)

[personal profile] scotch_egg 2022-03-11 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
That depends on who you want to be forgiven by. [He's pretty sure Fell would forgive Anthony pretty much everything]

How do know... How did we get here? [as for no friend of Fell's... well, he might not precisely be that either]

A spy? Who would I spy for? Heaven? Hell? And for what? Can't they see everything anyway? Isn't that the point?
serpentinthegarden: (On a mission)

[personal profile] serpentinthegarden 2022-03-11 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to be forgiven!

[ Forgiven, for what! Asking questions? Getting bored with the eternal peace and harp music? His golden eyes rolled hard. ]

Both, either, they could have decided they needed a man on the ground to look into things for them. I haven't been advertising that I'm a demon so you had to learn that from some where!
scotch_egg: (mild surprise)

[personal profile] scotch_egg 2022-03-11 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. I'm not. Listen. [he turns to face him]

We're here. I've been places like this before. I don't even know... where home is anymore. What it is. [it was maybe too much to say. Too much to admit. But Anthony wouldn't care so it didn't matter. He swallowed hard] But the last...place... I met you and Fell. Or a version of you and Fell. That's how I know.

But it doesn't matter.

Re: 3. Mystery in the History

[personal profile] hellonspectacles 2022-03-11 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
The lights flicker back to life to reveal a gangly young man sitting cross-legged in the middle of the floor. His glasses as askew and his hair is ruffled, but his expression appears unperturbed, even when a woman’s voice interrupts the silence left by the retreating ghosts.

“In my experience, revenants are rarely very forthcoming. I only wish I knew what was drawing so many of them here. Watch your step, by the way.” He nods at the ward he’s drawn on the floor closest to where the voice is coming from. Most anything, living or dead, who tries to step past it is likely to hit something like an invisible electric fence.
serpentinthegarden: (Listening)

[personal profile] serpentinthegarden 2022-03-11 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ It was time for that slow, appraising look, as his pacing turned to more of a curious circling instead. ]

So your like the Quantum Leap guy? Out there hopping from one reality to the next?
deviledlegs: (pussy whisperer)

[personal profile] deviledlegs 2022-03-11 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
If "might"s were enough to stop me, I wouldn't be alive today.

[A slither of smoke escapes his nostrils, and he sighs, leans back against the ship's railing.]

I ain't keepin' up with the rest of your philosophizing though. You saying you've been through this before?
scotch_egg: (Default)

[personal profile] scotch_egg 2022-03-11 04:10 am (UTC)(link)

The what? [he has no idea what you mean. The words make sense separately, but together...]

Aye... Something like that. Wish I could stop. [which is not a lie but not the truth anymore either]

“…Oh! Fascinating.” This bit of information might be unexpected, but it isn’t the strangest thing he has encountered in the last few days. “I’ve never heard of a digital storage device that could be installed into someone’s brain before. It sounds incredibly useful.”
scotch_egg: (Default)

[personal profile] scotch_egg 2022-03-11 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
[he wrinkles his nose but lets it alone]

Twice. Every time it's like a mindfuck. I'm bloody tired of it. [and he looks tired. There are bags under his eyes and he doesn't look like he eats well-- or barely at all.]

But...it doesn't seem to be a trend so take that as you will. [in other words, there's very few that he's seen that follow, or remember that they have]

Got a name?
serialskiller: (parade rest)

[personal profile] serialskiller 2022-03-11 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
"It can be." Murderbot is hesitating, trying to decide if it wants to elaborate more on its own nature. It probably sounds like it's hedging a little, and it seems to be looking only at the books, not even glancing toward Pal. It's a very anxious bot.
hellonspectacles: (Fiat lux!)

[personal profile] hellonspectacles 2022-03-11 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
[taking his offered hand with a grateful smile] Hah. Thank you. I’ll never be what one would call kinesthetically talented, but I have enough self-preservation to have mastered ducking.

You’re rather good yourself. I assume your opponents don’t usually include fine china?
serpentinthegarden: (Contemplative bench)

[personal profile] serpentinthegarden 2022-03-11 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
TV show about a guy hopping through dimensions and ending up living other people's lives.

[ Its TV so Crowley had seen it a few times, more on reruns. ]

Maybe you will stop once this ship docks at where ever its going.

scotch_egg: (puzzled)

[personal profile] scotch_egg 2022-03-11 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe... [but it felt like his own life... just folded in on itself]

I doubt it. But it doesn't matter. Anyway...even if you are indestructible, don't take it for granted. Anything can happen and Fell would never forgive me if something happened we couldn't walk back.
deviledlegs: (the shirt has to go but you can stay)

[personal profile] deviledlegs 2022-03-11 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Twice. The dude's been mysteriously plucked out of his life and tossed into these weird ass circumstances twice before? No wonder he's such a fucking downer.

Maybe, just maybe, Sanji can cut him some slack for that.]

It's Sanji. First class sea cook and pirate extraordinaire. This ain't the first time I've been spirited away to some bizarre island or facility, but... It's the first time I woke up without my crew around.

Sounds like you've had a shit time of it.
hellonspectacles: (Default)

[personal profile] hellonspectacles 2022-03-11 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Pal notes the way the man shrinks into himself and considers him in silence for a moment, curious to know more but not wishing to make him uncomfortable. “How do you watch your stored serials?” That seems like an innocuous-enough question. “Is there some projection mechanism, or is the data sent directly to your optic nerve?”
serpentinthegarden: (Moral argument)

[personal profile] serpentinthegarden 2022-03-11 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Are you actually worried about me?

[ A human worried about a demon. HA! This had him smiling as he picked a direction and headed down the long hallway. ]

You should worry about yourself, you're the mortal one.

[ Its not like he was rooming with a demon hunter or anything! ]
serialskiller: (wtf)

[personal profile] serialskiller 2022-03-11 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Not even the optic nerve. I run them through my mind most of the time. Though when I've been lucky enough to be around a display surface I'm allowed to use, I like to play them externally. I don't know why, but it's different that way."

Maybe it's because it's not usually allowed to use display surfaces. That's an act of rebellion just as sitting is. Something it gets to choose to do now.
scotch_egg: (puzzled)

[personal profile] scotch_egg 2022-03-11 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone knows I'm going to die. That's inevitable. You being an idiot and dying on accident would be much more tragic. [he tweaks Anthony's nose without thinking about it and then backs off immediately]

Just watch your step-- for the sake of people that care about you.
serpentinthegarden: (You can do proper magic)

[personal profile] serpentinthegarden 2022-03-11 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The only saving grace in that... or er, the demonic equivalent of that... was that the tweaking of his nose wasn't a prelude to a magic trick. He recoiled in exasperated overdramatic fashion as one would expect from the drama demon he was but he was far too curious to retaliate. ]

What does that matter to you?
yourotherleft: (haki ping)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2022-03-11 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[yeah, about that...Zoro's eye drifts to the buffet, and can't help but notice that there aren't any servers at all in the entire room. He sure as hell didn't pay attention to where his drinks were coming from or why the serving trays were always full when he went back for more, but...surely, there'd be a waiter or two drifting around, wouldn't there?]

No, they don't. We'll have to keep an eye out for crew if we're gonna steal a life boat.

[already 'we,' because like it or not crewmates stick together and that's the only way out.]

At night, maybe. Less of a watch, then.
suehiro: (I don't see the shade)

[personal profile] suehiro 2022-03-11 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[ well, tetcho isn't people; though he's not smart enough to connect the fact that he's an ability user to it being the reason why he's seeing those...hands. which, now that he's looking closely are sort of creepy. ]

Are they? [ tetcho, despite feeling weirded out by them isn't shy about approaching. ] Can you touch them?
suehiro: (I don't see the shade)

[personal profile] suehiro 2022-03-11 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[ kinesthetically what—? oh, maybe he means good with moving around? tetcho nods as if he understood that sentence perfectly and as if he's not one whole-lost-as-fuck himbo without the hunting dogs by his side. ]

Very good thing to master especially in this place. [ he sheathes his sword ] Not...normally no but maybe there is an ability user out there who can fling plates at people. I wouldn't know.

You're also...new to this place?
