TEST DRIVE MEME #5

1. not subtle revealings

[you wake up.

it doesn't matter where you were before. going to bed? dying? opening the door to face a great evil? same result. you wake up in a soft bed with starched sheets in a cool, darkened room, sunlight peeking out from behind thick curtains. maybe you're alone; maybe you aren't. maybe you immediately notice the folded paper on the bedside table near your head. if you don't, you better fix that real quick: you won't be able to even open the door before you read it.

the note itself is written in a neat hand on white card stock; there is a stylized logo of a ship with the words SERENA ETERNA printed underneath. the note reads as follows:

Dear Passenger(s),

As your cruise director, it is my great honor to welcome you aboard the Serena Eterna, your destination for fun and adventure! We know you could have chosen any cruise line for your vacation, and we're very grateful you chose ours! On behalf of the Captain, I would like to assure each and every passenger that will we do whatever it takes to fulfill all your needs and desires during your journey with us.

At your earliest possible convenience, please attend the mandatory lifeboat drill by the end of the day. I'm sure everyone is very eager to get started on all the fun and sun, but safety always comes first! You can find your life jacket in your cabin's closet; carry it to your assigned muster station on deck one, where I will take you through the drill. If you can't find me in the crowd, just look for the gal with the winning smile!

See You Real Soon!

Sincerely,
Gal Friday

you walk to deck one. you have no other choice: every time you try to step in a direction some unseen being considers "not towards deck one," you find your legs no longer move, staying stock still, frozen. whether compelled quickly by curiosity, or delayed by pure stubbornness, the result is the same, and you are left milling around with other similarly curious or stubborn people.

you see someone in uniform near the front of the crowd. she seems to be a gal, but is missing the winning smile, along with most of her other features. she seems to see you, though, rushing to your side and placing a lei around your neck with great formality. a voice, cheery but artificial, sees to come from nowhere and everywhere.]

Welcome! I'm very glad to have you aboard!

[you touch the lei. rooster feathers, lotus seeds, and a carved circle of something white and hard, linked onto a silk string.

after the drill is completed, you are seemingly free to go. or, well, your legs work, now. and maybe that's as good as it's gonna get.]

2. a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling

[the reflections are missing. all of them. in mirrors. in television screens. on the backs of spoons. nothing looks back at you.

then, figures do show up. not your own, like you'd expect. thin, wispy apparitions, people with pleading eyes and hands, reaching out to place their palms against the surface, from their own end. faces familiar and not, beckoning, mouthing words you just can't quite make out. help me, it might be. get me out, perhaps. just until you're close enough, until your skin warms the surface of whatever it is you're peering into. and then, those same hands wrap, all too real, burning-cold against your flesh, and pull, trying to drag you through the surface, making up for their lack of strength with desperation. any flesh unlucky enough to enter the reflection comes back bone-white and cold, all sensation dead, though it will fade within a few hours.

in retrospect, it looks a bit more like they were saying something different. something more like, better you than me. or maybe it's not even words at all. they look a bit more like they're laughing.]

3. complex mementos

[but, hey. sometimes changes are good! like, today, in Playback, there's a brand-new game available for all the children to play! it's an old-fashioned sort of claw machine, the type that's so large, a particularly dedicated kindergartner could wriggle their way inside. the prizes vary, and sit loose: bags of candy, stuffed toys, firearms, painfully early-00s electronics, actually that one just looks like a dead iguana, tiny ship-branded knickknacks... like all the other games in the arcade, the game starts up automatically upon being touched; lack of quarters shouldn't keep you from having fun! pro tip: they are loaded, and they will go off if you suck at claw games and let it fall.]

Maeve considers the initial response and trains her expression into something neutral. It is a strange thing to say and even stranger that it's said almost like a regular sentence. "Well, that is a relief, I'll wager." She doubts anyone would want something toxic.

She glances out at the others that have gathered. "I have been here for some time, but I was once like them. New to this place. I suppose I'm newer than some." She looks back at Nanachi. "I'm Maeve, by the way. Sorry to sneak up on you. I promise it wasn't on purpose."

She smiles warmly at the suggestion, happy he wants to continue the conversation. "I'd like that." She gestures toward the arcade exit. "I haven't been here very long, but I think there are a bunch of restaurants and cafes around here..."

She doesn't trust the food either, but they can probably just sit without anyone giving them trouble. Maybe.

Not a ghost hunter. Sorry.

[She shrugs a little.]

Honestly? I am freaking out. I'm just pretty good at hiding it. I'm also still pretty convinced this is a dream.

[personal profile] formersurgeon 2022-07-21 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently.

[The comment is wry but not malicious. She gives him a smile and accepts his hand.]

I'm Joan Watson.

"Fresh victim too, huh?" he asks, stuffing his hands in his pockets and following along. Once they exit he glances both ways down the promenade, then nods towards the café he'd spotted earlier. Seems more appropriate than the variety of bars.

Didn't think I was that lucky.

[ Darcy's just going to start walking and hope Joan gets the message and follows her out and away. ]

I can pinch you if you want. It's not a dream. I know that probably doesn't mean much, but you're going to wake up tomorrow and still be here. I'm sorry, for what it's worth. Basically nobody actually wants to be here. Hope you like magic and megalomaniac necromancers.

"I have a tortoise," she says, giving him a smile. "And I read a book on identifying reptiles once." It was one of the many books Sherlock had left by her door when he was still training her as a detective. She had read it with some impatience, since she didn't understand what it could possibly have to do with being a detective. "It did come in handy to identify a gila monster bite."

She steps back from the machine to look at the man. "It depends. Usually machines like this are rigged. But I don't know if any of that applies here."

[personal profile] formersurgeon 2022-07-21 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"So to speak," she answers as she follows him. He chooses a café, which she appreciates, as a bar would definitely have a different and less comfortable atmosphere with someone she's just met.

"Although I'm still not convinced this isn't a dream."

"Ah, typical of the carnival-style attraction, then, and yet it doesn't ask for money. I'm not sure if we're being swindled or not."

He shakes his head, but he smiles, because honestly this is one of the milder moral conundrums he's had to deal with lately. "You are a woman of interesting and slightly surprising interests, it seems," Watson says amiably. "But I really do have to ask in what sort of circumstances was it useful to identify the bite of any particular lizard."

That's such a niche piece of information, after all, so he can't really help but be curious about it.

"Yeah, me neither," he agrees, going to find a seat far away from the counters where ghosts might show up. "Coma seems likely, given how it seems to just go on..."

Especially likely for him, but he doesn't need to mention that. Anyone could get in a car crash or something and end up in a coma.

"That's kind of true of this place as a whole." Joan still can't figure out what exactly this place is all about, what whoever brought her here wants from her, and why. Even if this is all a dream, that still seems to be an important consideration, if just as a metaphor.

"Oh," she says, giving him a smile. "I'm a detective. We had a case where the victim had a gila bite on his calf."

[Her eyes look down to her hand, and she wishes that she hadn't let go. Especially given the question she wants to ask him is something that could be hard for him to talk about. He had taken so much blame on himself, and it breaks her heart that he'd do that.]

I want to know something.

[She starts, looking up at him with sad eyes that hold sorrow she's not going to let flow out of her in tears. It's one thing to get caught up in the moment and be emotional. But she can't bring herself to cry anymore. Not today.]

How long has it been for you? Since I —

[Here she goes. She can say this. All she has to do is be brave.]

Well, you know.

"Or something drug induced," she says, following him and sitting down at a little table farthest from the counter. "We had a case once where these people were involved in a secret medical trial and were all showing severe signs of psychosis. It turned out the medication was meant to alter your perception of time. Pretty much to do..." She gestures at everything. "This. Draw out dreams."

He pauses for a moment, bringing one hand to rub his goatee. "I'm not familiar with how to check for hallucinations, but you can to see if you're lucid dreaming."

César pulls an honest to god gold pocket watch (small, a woman's, but there's much more to notice if one is observant enough) and presses down on the crown to open the lid, showing her the time.

"Does this watch work?" He pauses for a moment and laughs, realizing. "... I'm psuedo-cosplaying. That's why I'm dressed like this. Might as well, right? The watch is a longer explanation."

Viggo raises his eyebrows at that particular story. "Huh. We don't get fun crimes like that in Oslo. New York must be exciting," he comments, somewhere between baffled and intrigued. "Then again... How many murders would you say you got in New York City, annually?"

"Having a minor for a roommate or rather be eaten by zombies?" César shrugs to the question, as it could honestly easily be both. "It takes time, but this places does have its benefits."

As for the other question... "Apparently, he feeds off our emotions. So fucked up keeps him happy. But he doesn't like it when people touch, and he won't listen to your conversations when you do that or in your rooms, again due to fearing seeing touching. Or so we've been told."

"Mmm," she hums. "I think last year the city had about 300. Which I'm guessing is probably way more than all of Norway."

[He looks up at that statement. Five little words should not be nearly so terrifying, and yet.

Eddie's quiet, watching her thoughtfully while he waits for her to continue. There is any number of things she could be wondering about, he supposes, and it's not like he wants to keep things from her.

The question is, ultimately, not one he's expecting. Though it makes sense.]

Oh. It hasn't been that long.

[How long has it been? Now that he's thinking bout it, Eddie isn't sure he knows specifically.]

A week, maybe? It's hard to keep track. There's been a lot happening.

"About ten times more, yeah," he answers with a small smile, nodding. "What's that about monkeys and typewriters?"

He's honestly completely fine with not having more 'fun' murders. He's got a pretty decent overview of every single murder that's happened in the past decade, not just in Oslo but the entire country. He knows all the unsolved ones in particular - there's twelve of them. (Used to be thirteen.)

"A detective?"

He's quietly delighted, because of course he is. Watson smiles a little. "I've been involved in a little bit of detective work myself. We never had any with a gila monster, though there was a venomous snake used as a murder weapon once. Fortunately, Holmes and I were able to keep the young woman who was the intended victim out of harm's way."
formersurgeon: (oh yeah?)

[personal profile] formersurgeon 2022-07-21 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
She blinks.

"Holmes?" She laughs a little. "That's weird...my partner is a Holmes too. That's a funny coincidence, isn't it?"

It has to be a coincidence. Right? Holmes is probably a common last name in England.

"I would never smack you. Or anyone. Which is kind of part of the problem. I felt a ton of guilt for soaking a reporter who tried to ambush me right after my team's funeral--I'm, uh. Not good at conflict with people."

It's one of her biggest flaws, but at least she's somewhat aware of it?
cheerleader: (chrissy57)

[personal profile] cheerleader 2022-07-21 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh.

[She slowly exhales the breath she wasn't aware she had been holding. Only a week? That's hardly any time at all. It helps explain his guilt though. It's still fresh for him. Only a week maybe.

Chrissy sits on the edge of her bed, looking up and over to him. She's anxiously fidgeting, her fingers working into knots as she works up the courage to confront what she's most afraid of.
]

You were there with me. [They had already established that, but it leads into the question she's hesitant to ask.] Did it look like it hurt that much?
munstar: (pic#15812739)

[personal profile] munstar 2022-07-21 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I was.

[Well, at least she hadn't asked about what had been happening.

That question is a little surprising, though, and Eddie's not sure how to answer. It's not that he doesn't know the answer so much as that he's not sure it's something she should hear. But keeping it from her after he'd already told her so much seems dumb.

Eddie has yet to move out of the doorway. He's still standing with his back to the door, half-afraid to go any further into the room.]
I was hoping you wouldn't ask that, but I don't want to start lying now, so...

[There are a lot of things he's hoping she won't ask, if he's being completely honest.] It looked like it hurt like hell.

"More murders means more weird killings. Statistically." She smiles in bemusement. "My partner would go nuts living in Norway. The work is extremely important to him."

If Joan is being honest with herself, she wouldn't be all too happy about it either, the work having become pretty central to her life and happiness too. But she's not about to say that out loud, particularly not to someone she just met.
