IMPENDING CANON UPDATE
HEY HOWDY HI! it's me, kelly, the woman behind the skeleton detective that's been snoopin up and down the ship for the past two months! it's time for the first big change to Skulduggery Pleasant -- his first canon update!
THIS CANON-JUMP WILL TAKE EFFECT THE MORNING AFTER THE 2ND EXCURSION. His meta-narrative has started getting foreshadowing though so I wanted to get this out there.
Skulduggery is moving from book 3 to book 4. What does this mean? First of all, here's the full rundown of all his various new abilities and alterations to his character (I'm not listing it all here). If you want to see some passages from the book to get an even better idea of how fucked Skulduggery is, you can check out this plurk thread I made with highlights from my reread. Here are some key changes that other characters will notice if they've ever interacted with Skulduggery before.
These changes will soften over time, as he adjusts with the support of friends -- assuming he doesn't tank all of his CR from the get-go! Nahhh he'll be fine. It's not like he's going to take this personally. I mean, who could he possibly blame for it? Gal Friday?
You might notice that I said this will be happening after the event, which means... We're throwing Skulduggery's sanity a little bon voyage party vi-a-vis the camping event! Hiking, campfire stories, exploring the far reaches of their manufactured forested paradise... he's gonna have a blast. It might be so much fun that he refuses to leave.

- PHYSICALLY: His guns are holstered with him everywhere now. Other than that, there's only one big difference: his skull is not the same skull he was wearing before. During the events of book 4, Skulduggery is reunited with his original skull. Those who know him well (or are just freaks who notice this kind of thing) will be able to tell that there's something different about his skull. This one, obviously, has higher cheekbones.
- TIMELINE-WISE: Skulduggery just spent 11 months in a hell dimension, where he spent every day being hunted down by madness-inducing ancient gods. They would then torture him and leave him to put himself back together again overnight so they could do it all over again!!! It was great. Definitely a 5-star vacation destination. Unfortunately, 11 months of being tortured by the Faceless Ones has left Skulduggery with a bout of...
- MADNESS: Skulduggery has a permanent madness debuff. This means that friends and strangers alike will notice some odd behavior from him. He has a new tendency to hallucinate (and talk to said hallucinations); his paranoia is more easily triggered, making him less trusting; and his anger is more hair-trigger than before. Sometimes, it might seem to be for no reason; other times, there might be a good cause. For example...
- BAD APPROACHES: Skulduggery will react poorly to being snuck up on. There's a 50/50 chance he'll throw a punch or fireball your way if you surprise him. Look, you'd be sensitive too if you had to spend a year running from monsters that take you apart piece by piece!
- DISILLUSIONMENT/DEREALIZATION: By far the biggest change will be how Skulduggery views their situation aboard the Serena Eterna. See, the canon update process strongly resembles the way a reflection might transfer memories to its host, which... makes the whole ship seem far less real than it did before. Skulduggery will struggle to accept (sometimes even comprehend) that any of this is real. More importantly, he'll have trouble accepting that he himself is real. Expect more flippancy towards the ship than already seen, as well as that fabled reckless endangerment I hyped up when I first joined :)
- A LITTLE VILE: Being rattled by his experiences, combined with his restored skull, has left Skulduggery with a less-than-firm hand on his evil alternate persona. It's a whole thing but, suffice it to say, Lord Vile is Not Happy to be stuck on the ship. He would much rather be back home, murdering the shit out of the new so-called Death Bringer. (It's basically the heavyweight championship title for necromancers and Lord Vile intends to defend his belt.) So, if you happen to notice Skulduggery talking to himself in the third person, or funny colors in his meta-narrative, just... you know, be cool. man. (We'll worry about that guy later.)
