It's an absurd accusation, of course--or it was--would have been? It's hard to say what the proper grammar is, given the paradox that should have undone them but apparently hadn't. (Something worth researching in the future--the paradox, not the grammatical implications.) She lets the accusation stand though, it's a very succinct way to explain that she had been worried about him, and distressed to find him missing for any span of time.
