TEST DRIVE MEME #6

1. took a time-traveling ride

[you wake up.

it doesn't matter where you were before. going to bed? dying? opening the door to face a great evil? same result. you wake up in a soft bed with starched sheets in a cool, darkened room, sunlight peeking out from behind thick curtains. maybe you're alone; maybe you aren't. maybe you immediately notice the folded paper on the bedside table near your head. if you don't, you better fix that real quick: you won't be able to even open the door before you read it.

the note itself is written in a neat hand on white card stock; there is a stylized logo of a ship with the words SERENA ETERNA printed underneath. the note reads as follows:

Dear Passenger(s),

As your cruise director, it is my great honor to welcome you aboard the Serena Eterna, your destination for fun and adventure! We know you could have chosen any cruise line for your vacation, and we're very grateful you chose ours! On behalf of the Captain, I would like to assure each and every passenger that will we do whatever it takes to fulfill all your needs and desires during your journey with us.

At your earliest possible convenience, please attend the mandatory lifeboat drill by the end of the day. I'm sure everyone is very eager to get started on all the fun and sun, but safety always comes first! You can find your life jacket in your cabin's closet; carry it to your assigned muster station on deck one, where I will take you through the drill. If you can't find me in the crowd, just look for the gal with the winning smile!

See You Real Soon!

Sincerely,
Gal Friday

you walk to deck one. you have no other choice: every time you try to step in a direction some unseen being considers "not towards deck one," you find your legs no longer move, staying stock still, frozen. whether compelled quickly by curiosity, or delayed by pure stubbornness, the result is the same, and you are left milling around with other similarly curious or stubborn people.

you see someone in uniform near the front of the crowd. she seems to be a gal, but is missing the winning smile, along with most of her other features. she seems to see you, though, rushing to your side and placing a lei around your neck with great formality. a voice, cheery but artificial, sees to come from nowhere and everywhere.]

Welcome aboard! I'm so happy you could join us!

[you touch the lei. rooster feathers, lotus seeds, and a carved circle of something white and hard, linked onto a silk string.

after the drill is completed, you are seemingly free to go. or, well, your legs work, now. and maybe that's as good as it's gonna get.]

2. so many dragons lurking out in the fog

[the cabins closest to the laundry room door will notice first. the steady hums and thuds of the machines, muffled by walls, are growing louder and louder, until it almost sounds like someone is bashing them against the wall. soapy water leaks from under the closed door, drips from the sides.

until someone is dumb enough to open it.

it’s a flash flood of detergent, a wave of foam and hot water feet high spilling forth and bringing down and along anything caught in its path. you’d think it would be a quick burst, that once whatever had built up in the room was released, the torrent would subside. but, it doesn’t. and a river of half-washed socks overtakes the hallways.]

3. I need protection from the things in my head

[The Infinite Tommy Bahama, everyone’s favorite destination for laid-back island sophistication, is a bit of an odd duck on the Promenade. and not just because it’s seemingly shoved between two extant locales, or because it’s a clothing store among bars and restaurants. for some reason, the unseen spirits that attend the other bars and shops, doing the routine duties necessary to keep such places running, seem to avoid this one, and it shows. clothes that are taken off the racks are not put back on again, leaving increasingly large piles of floral print and polyester blends in every aisle.

and that is where he is born.

there’s just so many piles. and they all look pretty much the same, each as tacky as the one next to it. it would be hard to notice that one has moved while your back was turned to it. difficult to realize that a singular pile has started stalking you through the stacks and racks. until it’s too late to turn back, until you’ve lost sight of the entrance, and the piles of discarded slacks and blazers seem to conglomerate into one massive beast, which rises from the polished wood floors and throws its weight upon its hapless victim.

the bahamanal strikes.]

Rose laughs along with that. "Oh good! You must have done a good job then. Even Harriet Jones couldn't set up the UK for permanent success."

Her laughter catches on something and subsides, and though she keeps smiling, it's a little more complicated now.

"I don't know about permanent," she says, "but ... I think they'll manage for a bit. I'm hoping not to be here for too terribly long."
bigbadrose: (wolfish grin)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Fair," Rose nods. "I mean like... one week. But UK is really big, and people are really mental."

[personal profile] not_the_last 2022-09-21 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Whereas we're fairly small, and ... we've undergone some recent reconstruction, after an interregnum of sorts. So there's been a lot of work done lately, in the interests of stability, and ... well, perhaps we'll get to see how well it runs in my absence."

An absence of more than a night and a day, this time. Still.

I see.

[For once, he bites his tongue on that. He picks up a wet pair of pants and nods.]

It’s not usually for one in my standing… [Gabriel shut the fuck up] But seeing as we’re the only two here…

[He shrugs. He can help.]

Radley sighs, realizing he's intruded.

"I'm sorry," he says. "This was the closest door. There's a flood out there!" He points at the door. "A washer overloaded or something, but I've never seen anything like it! It's like a cartoon show!"

Water continues to ooze under the door, and there may even be a sound of rushing water.

Luke definitely isn't as sure of this, but he sighs and nods, not wanting to make a scene. At least not yet. Rose is being nice, so he doesn't want to blow up in anger and frustration like he feels like doing. He has learned a lot since he first started out.

"I wonder if they even have normal drinks around here," he says. "And food.... Sure, let's go find out. Hey, Rose. I'm Luke fon Fabre."

He's probably done that all backwards, but hey, at least he's being polite.
bigbadrose: (yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah noooo...)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Interreg-num?" Even Rose is surprised she managed that word, and she hopes she didn't embarrass herself with it. "Ah well, these things usually work out. Even when you disappear for a year and your Mum goes mental with panic and has your ex-boyfriend arrested like 3 times on suspicions. It works out."

That's... not as reassuring as she meant it to be. At all.
bigbadrose: (rose tint my world)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Probably for the best. Though the Doctor wouldn't be able to refrain from commenting EITHER, and Mickey certainly would have, but since Mickey got hauled in for question thanks to Rose's Mum three times... yeah. They have their reasons.]

[And Rose beams, she genuinely appreciates it, and gets that he wouldn't normally do it, so she's extra grateful!]
Thanks! Normally you'd be doing holier things, right? Normally I'd be like, "Aw nah, I'm not doing this again," but like you said, there's no one else.... so, I guess I better do my best to be a hero.

What's it like being an actual angel?
bigbadrose: (dance like no one's watching)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Rose beams. He's doing great!

"They must." She nods, quite sure of herself. "It's done up like a cruise ship, and it's not all jumpscares and creepy crawlies, so I'm sure of it. It's pretty 'luxe even by 22nd century Mars-cruise standards. Might not have Orange Julius or the like, but I'll be pretty surprised if it's all gruel and C-rations."

She leads the charge to discovery. And stops to try to ask a ghost questions. It doesn't go well, but she's fearless, just continuing the charge, to find drinks! Ohhhh elevators. And maps! Like a mall directory! She happily gestures to Luke, actually bouncing on the balls of her feet. "Look look! See? There's a coffee shop and like 5 dinner spots. A lot of bars too," her lips purse for a moment, but she brightens, "Mom would love it." That's a danger too, she thinks.

"Yes, sorry -- that's a, ah, period between rulers. An interruption of government, you could say."

She's trying not to think about what her brother and her bodyguards will be doing at home, once they find her gone.
bigbadrose: (whut now?)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
"A flood? Washer?" And then she giggles. "Blimey..." She wants to look... but not enough to risk anything. "Okay, don't worry!" She gets down her lifejacket from the shelf and hands it to him. Women and children first be damned. She's been in crazier things, and Titanic Rose could have shared the door. "This better not be like the Titanic..." She glanced to the windows, but they weren't sinking. Okay good.
bigbadrose: (happy)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Ohhhhh, that's pretty good timing then!" she brightens. "Good! Have fun with it. I'm not sure leaders in my world get enough vacation breaks. It might help. I'll have to ask someone about it sometime."
not_the_last: (Default)

[personal profile] not_the_last 2022-09-21 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
"My brother's been saying I should have a vacation," she says, with a slightly effortful smile. "I'll have to tell him all about this when I get back."
bigbadrose: (I'll do my best yeah?)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Rose smiles fondly, expression softening even more. "Yeah? I always wanted a brother. What's it like?"

Jack kind of was almost. Except Rose and him flirted too much for that. "What's he do in the city?"
crystalmaster: (Default)

[personal profile] crystalmaster 2022-09-21 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Radley takes it in surprise. "Thanks...."

He sighs at the Titanic crack. "Who knows, in some ways it might be worse...."
lukesdiary: (Default)

[personal profile] lukesdiary 2022-09-21 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Luke doesn't quite follow all of that, but they're discovering the food and drink before he figures out what to say.

"Your mom would like bars?!" he snorts in some surprise. "Who's your mom?"
bigbadrose: (if you really want to)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Rose scrunches her face up. "Nah, no way!" She brightens instantly and points out "No icebergs for one!"
not_the_last: (Default)

[personal profile] not_the_last 2022-09-21 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
She does not say, I used to have four.

"It's ... fun. And infuriating, on occasion. And very good. We were separated for a time, it's been good to have him back."

The second question makes her grin. "Well, he's an inventor of sorts, and he's been working on improvements to the city -- mechanical devices and the like, to light the streets at night, or run water into people's homes. His current title is Sophist of Native Ingenuity, but we're thinking of changing it, it doesn't really convey his duties very well."
bigbadrose: (wry grin)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Rose facepalms. "Well... she'd like all the deluxe of it... but yeah... bars too I guess. Don't tell her I said that if you ever meet. For that matter, don't tell the Doctor I said that either, he'd NEVER keep it to himself." Rose memorized the map, gestured to the elevators and led the way again! "She'd like the shopping most. Jackie Tyler. She's not a world-traveler though. She doesn't even like leaving the region for Holiday." A small sigh. "She'd always say, London's the best, why go anywhere else, everything you need is right there." Rose looks out the glass elevator with her open wanderlust on her sleeve and face. "She's never been on a cruise at all. But one like this?" Rose's eyes light up as they descend, and the new elaborate floors come into view. "Yeah, she'd love this."

Right until the ghosts and aliens start. Well, maybe she wouldn't even mind that. She'd been getting used to it more thanks to Rose, to be honest.

( the weird head-tilt-shoulder-shrug combo she makes in response to "cursed ship" is all the affirmation clarke initially offers. because it's complicated, right? the halls are well painted masterpieces of an old world by her standards, and the entire ship is bedecked with luxurious amenities (shops, laundry machines, endless supplies of food, on demand showers and free flowing drinking water, constantly restocking medicines, clothes that weren't spun out of hard-won leather or 100 year old hand me downs, etc — swimming pools, casinos, and bars are also new to her but less marveled at) she'd never seen before walking past them. but they are still asked, practically commanded, to suffer and die on a semi-regular basis in order to keep the lights on.

and this has been happening for far longer than either her or jason's existence on the serena eterna. decades at least. centuries... who knew? )

I think the only way to cleanse it would be to completely obliterate it from reality. But every time it's sunk, it's come back.

( the more sorceresses the better tho, and maybe next time they could try just blowing it up. )

So — want a tour?

Radley manages a smirk of amusement. "At least you know what to do with an iceberg. I'm not sure anyone here knows what to do with this place."
lukesdiary: (Default)

[personal profile] lukesdiary 2022-09-21 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"The ... Doctor. Right," Luke says slowly. He definitely doesn't follow that.

"... Okay, all the stuff to do is better than the airships I've been on," he says. "But at least there aren't ghosts and clothes monsters and who knows what else."
bigbadrose: (Did you know you're my favorite?)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Nah! I have no idea what to do with an iceberg. Melt it with a hairdryer?" she quips easily enough. "Ghosts aren't too bad. Don't let 'em hurt you, but offer 'em sympathy and a listening ear if they want it. Same as any living creature, innit?"
bigbadrose: (biting bottom lip)

[personal profile] bigbadrose 2022-09-21 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
It is just as well. Rose once told the Doctor she literally couldn't tell anyone this kind of stuff. And although he dragged along Mickey so she could have that with someone, it still didn't really work. In the end, she's just gotten used to it. You'd be amazed what you can get used to.

"You've been on airships too!?" All the excited. "What, like zeppelins or...?" She bites her bottom lip for a moment. "The world I was born in didn't have them much, they used airplanes instead. Faster. But less with the leisurely explorer aesthetic, yanno? What kinda clothes monsters?" She feels like there has to have been one of those in her adventures already.... but nope, nothing's coming to mind. Strange that. Mannequins was damn close though, and that probably counted.
