TEST DRIVE MEME #5

1. not subtle revealings

[you wake up.

it doesn't matter where you were before. going to bed? dying? opening the door to face a great evil? same result. you wake up in a soft bed with starched sheets in a cool, darkened room, sunlight peeking out from behind thick curtains. maybe you're alone; maybe you aren't. maybe you immediately notice the folded paper on the bedside table near your head. if you don't, you better fix that real quick: you won't be able to even open the door before you read it.

the note itself is written in a neat hand on white card stock; there is a stylized logo of a ship with the words SERENA ETERNA printed underneath. the note reads as follows:

Dear Passenger(s),

As your cruise director, it is my great honor to welcome you aboard the Serena Eterna, your destination for fun and adventure! We know you could have chosen any cruise line for your vacation, and we're very grateful you chose ours! On behalf of the Captain, I would like to assure each and every passenger that will we do whatever it takes to fulfill all your needs and desires during your journey with us.

At your earliest possible convenience, please attend the mandatory lifeboat drill by the end of the day. I'm sure everyone is very eager to get started on all the fun and sun, but safety always comes first! You can find your life jacket in your cabin's closet; carry it to your assigned muster station on deck one, where I will take you through the drill. If you can't find me in the crowd, just look for the gal with the winning smile!

See You Real Soon!

Sincerely,
Gal Friday

you walk to deck one. you have no other choice: every time you try to step in a direction some unseen being considers "not towards deck one," you find your legs no longer move, staying stock still, frozen. whether compelled quickly by curiosity, or delayed by pure stubbornness, the result is the same, and you are left milling around with other similarly curious or stubborn people.

you see someone in uniform near the front of the crowd. she seems to be a gal, but is missing the winning smile, along with most of her other features. she seems to see you, though, rushing to your side and placing a lei around your neck with great formality. a voice, cheery but artificial, sees to come from nowhere and everywhere.]

Welcome! I'm very glad to have you aboard!

[you touch the lei. rooster feathers, lotus seeds, and a carved circle of something white and hard, linked onto a silk string.

after the drill is completed, you are seemingly free to go. or, well, your legs work, now. and maybe that's as good as it's gonna get.]

2. a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling

[the reflections are missing. all of them. in mirrors. in television screens. on the backs of spoons. nothing looks back at you.

then, figures do show up. not your own, like you'd expect. thin, wispy apparitions, people with pleading eyes and hands, reaching out to place their palms against the surface, from their own end. faces familiar and not, beckoning, mouthing words you just can't quite make out. help me, it might be. get me out, perhaps. just until you're close enough, until your skin warms the surface of whatever it is you're peering into. and then, those same hands wrap, all too real, burning-cold against your flesh, and pull, trying to drag you through the surface, making up for their lack of strength with desperation. any flesh unlucky enough to enter the reflection comes back bone-white and cold, all sensation dead, though it will fade within a few hours.

in retrospect, it looks a bit more like they were saying something different. something more like, better you than me. or maybe it's not even words at all. they look a bit more like they're laughing.]

3. complex mementos

[but, hey. sometimes changes are good! like, today, in Playback, there's a brand-new game available for all the children to play! it's an old-fashioned sort of claw machine, the type that's so large, a particularly dedicated kindergartner could wriggle their way inside. the prizes vary, and sit loose: bags of candy, stuffed toys, firearms, painfully early-00s electronics, actually that one just looks like a dead iguana, tiny ship-branded knickknacks... like all the other games in the arcade, the game starts up automatically upon being touched; lack of quarters shouldn't keep you from having fun! pro tip: they are loaded, and they will go off if you suck at claw games and let it fall.]

[She'd been passing by without paying all that much attention, when the sudden scream startles Rita--and then the other teen is bumping into her before she can quite figure out what the hell just happened. Taking a step back, Rita scowls (and tries to pretend that didn't send her heart rate shooting up, either).]

H-hey, just don't scream like that! What are doing, anyway?!

[personal profile] neverleave 2022-08-04 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Some investigations involve breaking into things. [His tone is neutral, though. Natsuno doesn't seem bothered that she's rolling her eyes at him.] Claw machines are rigged against players, anyway.

[But if she wants to play anyway, that's her business. He looks back at the game.]

Most of the games here don't have prizes. There's score, if you care about bragging rights.

RITA 🥹❤️ I played tov on switch not too long ago lol

[personal profile] qliphoths 2022-08-04 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
N-nothing! I wasn’t doing anything -!

[ she’s flustered: both from nearly being caught afraid, and from almost harming an innocent civilian. not to mention, this girl seemed to be younger than her —- and smaller, too. their collision could have turned out much worse.

as embarrassing as it is, this is no way to be acting, though.
]

… I’m sorry. I should have been paying more attention. I was just… a little distracted by the mirrors. Are you hurt?

[The man is walking past the muster drill on the way back from the sports deck, after some early morning stretches and calisthenics. As such, his shirt is stained with sweat, his hair is mussed, and there's a towel around his neck.]

Ah, newly arrived, perhaps? Welcome to the Serena Eterna, I'm sorry you're here.

[The lei does give it away quite nicely.]

[ if this had been a different circumstance, his remark may have earned a slight smile from her: he wasn’t wrong.

however, what she gathers from his response is that she’s going to have to at least try this claw game if she wants a chance at one of the toys.
]

I don’t see the point in playing other games, if that’s the only objective… It seems like a waste of time, when the goal has no substance.

Are you just playing it to brag, then?

[ how absurd.

she turns her attention back to the claw machine and presses the button marked ‘START’. it comes to life, lighting up with a tinny, childish tune.

she can’t quite get the hang of it, even after one, two, three tries —- the claw doesn’t come anywhere near close to grabbing any of the prizes. not even the disgusting, dead iguana. unlike some of her friends, tear wasn’t exactly great with technology.
]
qliphoths: (pic#15856973)

o/ im sorry for her

[personal profile] qliphoths 2022-08-04 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[ in a way, she’s glad she happened to see someone who appeared to be more well-seasoned here than those who’d been in her orientation.

surely this man must know something about this ship…?
]

I apologize for stopping you while you were in the middle of something. [ she briefly glances at his towel ]

Since you seem busy, I’ll get to the point. What’s the easiest way for me to get off of this ship and go back to where I came from? Despite what my welcome card says, I didn’t sign up for any vacation here.

[Dead folks solidarity!]

Oh. Sweet. Well I mean, not sweet. Sorry you died and all but I was kinda feeling like the only one. Like maybe me being here was a mistake.

[He gives a half smirk at the mention of starting a boat gang.]

So I think being a police officer I'm like.... legally precluded from joining a gang? I think I have to turn in my badge and my belt or something.

[Well probably his badge and his gun but he doesn't have his gun here.]
businessorlibation: (pic#15460849)

No need to be sorry!

[personal profile] businessorlibation 2022-08-04 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[They're good questions. Entirely valid questions.]

Ah. No, I'm sorry, that's not something any of us have been able to answer yet. I've been here for what, five months now? People disappear, but we have no assurance that they've been returned to their home.
neverleave: (why are you even here)

[personal profile] neverleave 2022-08-04 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm playing because I'm bored.

[The goal is to kill time. When you're trapped in ship sailed by a mad magician who feeds on your pain, taking your mind off things is substance enough.

He watches Tear fail to grab a prize from the corner of his eye.]

Usually these machines are rigged to make people spend more money on trying again. This one's free, so I assume it's rigged to be annoying.

You should really just smash it open.
qliphoths: (pic#15856970)

[personal profile] qliphoths 2022-08-04 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Five months… [ she falls silent, taking in this man’s words.

that’s a long time to be stuck here, with no way home… rather than a vacation, this sounds more like a hostage situation to her.
]

I see. Do the disappearances have anything in common? It’s hard to imagine people disappearing here without a reason… are you sure they didn’t just fall into the water?
makemeasong: (131)

[personal profile] makemeasong 2022-08-04 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry you died, too. But hey, we don't have to call it a gang. What's the more savory term?

[ Clara pauses to think, then smirks. ] We're a regular club. President, Vice-President. [ She points at herself, then him. ] If we find a Secretary and Treasurer, then we'll really stay under the radar.

[ She laughs softly, then shrugs as it trails off. ] Just seems like in this place we're gonna need all the friends we can get. [ Then, she circles back to what he said before, about his arrival and she nods a little. ]

I thought it was a mistake too. I was in my ship, then I was on this ship and I'm sort of hoping mine is here somewhere. Startin' to doubt it though.

businessorlibation: (Default)

[personal profile] businessorlibation 2022-08-04 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Relatively so. Those who fall in are brought back onto the ship. And those who die reawaken in their cabins.

Those who die under any circumstances, not just a fall into the drink.

[He knows that sounds crazy, so he watches her reaction (and considers her clothing thoughtfully).]
myagic: (005)

aah nice!! Abyss is my top Tales even though I play from ToV...an oldie but forever a goody 💕

[personal profile] myagic 2022-08-04 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Too busy checking yourself out, huh...?

[That...sounds suspiciously suspicious, so Rita's reply comes in a flat, skeptical tone before she shrugs.]

I'm fine, but you really should watched where you're going. Who knows what could be--gaaaah?!

[And then it's Rita's turn to shriek as she hazards a glance at the mirror, only to see the wispy tendrils slithering from its surface, still seeking Tear.]
qliphoths: (pic#15782360)

[personal profile] qliphoths 2022-08-04 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[ her eyes narrow. so if they jump off, they’re brought back… and if they die, they’re also somehow brought back? it sounded ridiculous.

she’s torn for a moment between believing him, and rejecting what he’s saying. either way, she isn’t stupid enough to die just to test his theory.
]

… So there’s a difference between dying and a disappearance, is what you’re saying. [ she cups her chin in thought ]

If what you’re saying is true … then have you died here, before?

I have not, personally. I have, however, been awake to see my roommate's corpse come back to life at dawn the day after he was killed.

[It's clear he cares very much about his roommate, that him being there to witness the return was an intentional choice.]

temporary feeling; mirror ghost party (aka Feelings party in a bit here also lbr 🎉)

[personal profile] fonomena 2022-08-04 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[There are occasionally mid-sized mirrors set in ornate frames, hung up along the walls of the ship's interior halls here and there--decorative and thoroughly unnecessary, like pretty much everything else about this vessel. Jade, long since accustomed to their presence by now, has barely spared them a glance for the last few hours, and so has yet to notice the absence of reflections. No, quite preoccupied enough already with his own thoughts, he's instead in the process of crossing from the dining hall to the library, resigning himself to yet another afternoon of picking through the utterly useless fictional material therein...

Except--in the end he doesn't even make it halfway to the library, really. Not before ending up quite sidetracked by the unmistakably high and shrill sound of screaming. ...Screaming? Assuredly an alarming enough sound just about anywhere, and all the worse in this particular place; the noise comes from somewhere close, likely just around this next corner here, and as Jade's increasing his pace he's already moderately steeling himself for whatever unfortunate sight he's about to see. (Someone getting stabbed again this month? Goodness, he certainly hopes not--)

--And so Jade rounds the corner at pretty much the exact same time someone's turning to rush away from an offending mirror herself. It's a small and clumsy sort of collision, though at least Jade's overall taller and heavier enough to not be completely bowled over. Briefly disoriented himself, between the crashing and her moderate flailing and shouting, his automatic response is to grab this person by the shoulders and steady them.]

Oh, not a problem. Was there something--

[The words initially slip out even before just who he's grabbing actually sinks in. ......But now it is sinking in, too, as Jade focuses properly upon--long brown hair, blue eyes, a Locrian uniform pattern and color to clothing--

The words fade in his throat, to be sure, as pure surprise quite promptly punches the rest of the air out of his lungs. It even parses on Jade's face, briefly, something thoroughly startled crossing his features as he blinks down at her and all other lines of thought grind to a complete halt.]

A pleasure to meet you.

[With a sweeping, overdramatic bow, he introduces himself in turn.]

Moon Master Ebalon. [And then, standing back up,] I do hope we can get along, huhu. I hope you don't mind if I stand by and cheer you on while you try to rescue that thing from the confines of the machine.

[Why do you say shit like that, bro.]

[Palamedes can’t help but be unsettled whenever a new crop of people appear on board the ship and he catches them going through the motions of the Serena Eterna safety training. It’s a cruel exercise, given the sorts of dangers that actually await them all, which won’t be sorted with the help of a life vest and a muster station. No, their survival will take a hell of a lot more than that.

Still, Pal watches the awful pantomime with a morbid kind of curiosity. When the girl approaches, he offers her a faint smile, unperturbed by her curtness. If anything, he appreciates the way she gets to the point. Surety of purpose is useful on this boat.]

And I shall answer to the best of my ability. How can I help you?

[ There's a boy covered in dried blood standing there watching the lifeboat demonstration with a disgruntled look on his face. It's not the blood he's upset about, it's the fact that he's being forced to watch this despite very stubbornly trying to avoid it.

As soon as his legs work again, he storms right off, muttering to himself. ]

I don't need a goddamn lifeboat. I'm already dead.

[ And he has yet to realize he can actually clean that blood off now despite still being a ghost, so he'll just walk around soaked in it for a while. ]

( complex mementos )

[ Claw machines aren't really his game. Normally, he'd be making a bee-line for the pinball machine, but something about the claw game catches his eye this time. In the middle of all the stupid plushies and knickknacks is what looks like an honest to god gun.

Does he need a gun? Absolutely not. Does he have the willpower to resist one being dangled right in front of him like this? Also no. For probably the first time since getting here, he actually smiles. ]

Aw, fuck yeah!

[ And he goes for it, although his first try fails: the claw falls over the gun but doesn't catch on anything, harmlessly sliding over the gun and dropping absolutely nothing into the prize bin. ] Ugh, come on. [ And he's going for the gun again. ]

[A chuckle because that's kind of adorable.] Have club meetings in the buffet with drinks and snacks. I'm down for this.

Yeah I think this place sucks less if we're not all trying to kill each other or fighting.

[A frown because he sure hasn't been practicing what he preaches. Though he's feeling a lot better about that not being an issue in the future.]

You have your own ship? Because I haven't seen anything. It's not like this one really has a dock hanging off of it. But I dunno, we could go take a look?

[He assumes she means ship like the kind that goes in water, and not the kind that goes through time and space Also he's pretty sure they won't find it, but maybe it'll take her mind of her arm for a bit if they go hunting for it.]

I'm pretty sure you'd notice another boat. Kinda wish it'd be that easy. [ She agrees with him, giving him a lopsided smile. ] It's a little smaller looking than that. Could probably fit in a moderate-sized broom closet, really.

[ Clara saw his slight frown, but sometimes it's better to move on and let things come up naturally if he wants to talk about something. She's heard more stories from people by not pushing. ]

I'm a time traveler. Well, space and time traveler. It's not weird for me to turn up places I've never been before, or even stuck for a while. But I really don't like being separated from my ship. [ She doesn't think it's here either, but always the optimist, she looks back toward the mirror. ]

I'm up for exploring as far away from mirrors as possible.

[ ooc: Since I'm in the game now, we could always continue this in my open post? I could do a top level after your next reply if that works? ]

tear 🤝 jade, soldier friends. idk why my brain wanted me to write colonel sanders

[personal profile] qliphoths 2022-08-05 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[ she recognizes the sound of his voice almost immediately, and her eyes widen in surprise. for a moment tear is thankful for the weight of his hands pressing onto her shoulders, grounding her — affirming to her that he’s real, warm, there.

truthfully jade had been the last person she had thought to see here, on a boat filled with tricks and faceless cruise directors. if someone from their world were to appear, she had assumed it would be of a far more sinister sort, an enemy long since passed. it would only be fitting for the haunted and dreary atmosphere she’s come to find.

but the fact that it was a trusted comrade, someone who she would admit to being a friend, was both a blessing as well as a concern.
]

Colonel —

What are you doing here? Why are you here?

[ her brow creases with a marked concern for him, and her prior fears melt into worry. it was bad enough that she had to wake up on this boat herself…

tear hadn’t missed the surprise his own expression had shown though, that brief glimpse of recognition — and she wonders if he, too, has had his fair share of spooky scenarios already.

but more importantly:
]

Are you alright?

[ he had been running too, after all. the fact it had been for her benefit hasn’t quite sank in yet. ]

[ so if one dies, they possibly awaken at dawn… this was all very useful information for her, and she mentally files it away for later. ]

I’m glad your roommate is alright, but that must have been very difficult for you… sitting and waiting next to a corpse can’t have been easy. [ she can’t imagine it being an over-all pleasant experience in general. tear isn’t very good with feelings, though, so she hopes she’s approaching this sensitively enough. ]

Were they completely normal when they came back to life?

It fits in a closet? That's fucking rad.

[Wait a traveler through space and time? That kinda sounds familiar, but he's also distracted from that by the fact that someone nearly got eaten by a mirror.]

Any experience with weird mirror ghosts in all that space and time travelling? Because they're really freaky. And kinda hate the idea that they're watching us all shower.

Well, I mean, I've been here a couple months now. After long enough in a shitty situation, you kind of have to get used to it, you know?

[He shrugs.]

Not that I won't jump overboard first chance I get, but... you know. Plus I've got people I want to look out for here too. Should at least tell César first before I ditch our room and leave him with the bill.

[He's mostly joking, but on second thought, who does pay for the whole cruise thing?]
